Jeremiah 33:5

They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city. THEY COME TO FIGHT WITH THE CHALDEANS - the Jews; the defenders of the "houses" () "come forward to fight with the Chaldeans," who burst into the city through the 'thrown-down houses;' but all the effect that they produced "is to fill them (the houses) with" their own "dead bodies....

There are two parts to this prophecy, — that the Jews were about to perish through their own fault, — and that they were to be restored through the favor and goodness of God alone. Here, then, in the first place, the Prophet condemns the false confidence of the people, who stoutly resisted the Chaldeans. _They came, _he says, _to fight with the Chaldeans; _but what would be the issue of the battle? even to _fill, _he says, _with the carcases of men their very houses _When he says that the Jews were _come, _he speaks of what had already, as it were, taken place. It is indeed a participle in the present tense, _coming; _but the Prophet here sets before their eyes what was to be, as though he had said, “The Jews will boldly rush forth, and will think themselves equal, and even superior to the Chaldeans; thus they will arm themselves with courage for the battle.” Then he says this, in order...

EXPOSITION A chapter of promises, having reference, first, to the people and kingdom in general (Jeremiah 33:4), and then to the royal and priestly offices in particular (Jeremiah 33:14). The first part is but the expansion of passages in the preceding prophecy, to which this chapter is attached by the opening verse. The remaining portion is less closely connected; it is occupied by promises of the perpetual duration of the house of David and of the Levites. It should be noticed by the student that there are difficulties connected with the authorship of Jeremiah 33:14, Jeremiah 33:26 (see below)....

THEY COME TO FIGHT WITH THE CHALDEANS,.... These _vv_., as they stand, are evidently corrupt; for "they" (seeing that the word cannot, as strict grammar demands, mean "the houses"), as applied to the defenders of the city, would require the verb _go out_instead of "come." There is something like an agreement among commentators that "the Chaldeans" were originally the subject, not the object, in Jeremiah 33:5. Thus the general sense is given in Co."s emendation of the passage, viz. "which are broken down, against which the Chaldaeans come with mounds and swords to fight and to fill them with the dead bodies, etc....
