And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: AND IT CAME TO PASS, THAT, WHEN ELIZABETH HEARD THE SALUTATION, THE BABE LEAPED IN HER WOMB. That this was like nothing of the same kind which she had felt before, and with which mothers are familiar, is plain from : nor does Elizabeth ascribe to it merely an extraordinary character; she describes it, and this when "filled with the Holy Spirit," as a sympathetic emotion of the unconscious babe at the presence of her and his Lord. 41._When Elisabeth heard _It is natural that sudden joy, on the part of a pregnant woman, should cause a motion of the child in her womb; but Luke intended to express an extraordinary occurrence. No good purpose would be served by involving ourselves in intricate questions, if the child was aware of the presence of Christ, or felt an emotion of piety: it is enough for us that _the babe started _by a secret movement of the Spirit. Luke does not say that the feeling belonged to the child, but rather intimates that this part of the Divine operation took place in the mother herself, that _the babe started in her womb _The expression, she _was filled with the Holy Ghost, _means that she was suddenly endued with the gift of prophecy to an unusual extent: for the gifts of the Spirit had not formerly been wanting in her, but their power then appeared more abundant and extraordinary....

39-56 It is very good for those who have the work of grace begun in their souls, to communicate one to another. On Mary's arrival, Elisabeth was conscious of the approach of her who was to be the mother of the great Redeemer. At the same time she was filled with the Holy Ghost, and under his influence declared that Mary and her expected child were most blessed and happy, as peculiarly honoured of and dear to the Most High God. Verse 41. _ELISABETH WAS FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST._] This seems to have been the accomplishment of the promise made by the angel, Luke 1:15, _He shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's_ _womb_. The mother is filled with the Holy Spirit, and the child in her womb becomes sensible of the Divine influence....

ELIZABETH WAS FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST - The meaning of this seems to be that she was filled with joy; with a disposition to praise God; with a prophetic spirit, or a knowledge of the character of the child that should be born of her. All these were produced by the Holy Spirit....

MARY VISITS ELISABETH. THE MAGNIFICAT. The passage links the two preceding incidents, and serves to show the inferiority of John the forerunner, to Jesus the Messiah. Mary (finding herself with child) proceeds to verify the sign. She seeks Elisabeth in a Judæ an village (perhaps Ain Karim, six miles west of Jerusalem, where a ruin called Mar Zacharias is shown). Elisabeth's unborn babe recognises the mother of the Messiah, and Elisabeth herself knows of Mary's honour, and praises her belief (follow _mg._ in Luke 1:45).
