52._He hath cast down the nobles _This translation has been adopted, for the sake of avoiding ambiguity: for though the Greek word δυνάσται is derived from δύναμις _, power, _it denotes governors and eminent rulers. Verse 52. _HE HATH PUT DOWN THE MIGHTY FROM THEIR SEATS_] Or, _He_ _hath taken down potentates from their thrones_. This probably alludes to the removal of _Saul_ from the throne of Israel, and the establishment of the kingdom in the person and family of _David_. And as Mary spoke _prophetically_, this saying may also allude to the destruction of the kingdom of Satan and his allies, and the final prevalence of the kingdom of Christ....

HATH PUT DOWN THE MIGHTY - The “mighty” here denotes princes, kings, or conquerors. See Isaiah 14:12. THEIR SEATS - Their “thrones,” or the places where they sat in pomp and power. EXALTED THEM - Raised them up, or placed them in the seats of those who had been removed. LOW DEGREE - Low or humble birth and condition in life. This probably has reference to the case of her ancestor David. Mary was celebrating the mercies of God to herself, to her family, and of course to her ancestors. It was natural to allude to that great event in their history when Saul was overcome in battle, and when David was taken from the sheepfold and placed on the throne. MARY VISITS ELISABETH. THE MAGNIFICAT. The passage links the two preceding incidents, and serves to show the inferiority of John the forerunner, to Jesus the Messiah. Mary (finding herself with child) proceeds to verify the sign. She seeks Elisabeth in a Judæ an village (perhaps Ain Karim, six miles west of Jerusalem, where a ruin called Mar Zacharias is shown). Elisabeth's unborn babe recognises the mother of the Messiah, and Elisabeth herself knows of Mary's honour, and praises her belief (follow _mg._ in Luke 1:45). The Song of Mary which follows is full of OT reminiscences, especially the Song of Hannah (1 Samuel 2:1).
