And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. AND BLESSED IS SHE THAT BELIEVED: FOR [ hoti (G3754)] THERE SHALL BE A PERFORMANCE OF THOSE OF THINGS WHICH WERE TOLD HER FROM THE LORD - or, rather perhaps (as in margin) "Blessed is she that believed that there shall be a performance," etc. But the word will bear either sense. This is an additional benediction on the Virgin for her implicit faith, in tacit and delicate contrast with her own husband....

45._And blessed is she that believed _It was by a hidden movement of the Spirit, as is evident from a former statement of Luke, that Elisabeth spoke. Verse 45. _BLESSED IS SHE THAT BELIEVED; FOR THERE SHALL BE_, c.] Or, _Blessed is she who hath believed that there shall be_, c. This I believe to be the proper arrangement of the passage, and is thus noticed in the marginal reading. Faith is here represented as the foundation of true happiness, because it receives the fulfilment of God's promises. Whatever God has promised, he intends to perform. We should believe whatever he has spoken-his own authority is a sufficient reason why we should believe. Let us only be convinced that God has given the promise, and then implicit faith becomes an indispensable duty: in this case not to believe implicitly would be absurd and unreasonable - God _will_ perform his promise, for HE _cannot_ lie....

BLESSED IS SHE THAT BELIEVED - That is, “Mary” who believed what the angel spoke to her. She was blessed not only in the act of believing, but because the thing promised would certainly be fulfilled. MARY VISITS ELISABETH. THE MAGNIFICAT. The passage links the two preceding incidents, and serves to show the inferiority of John the forerunner, to Jesus the Messiah. Mary (finding herself with child) proceeds to verify the sign. She seeks Elisabeth in a Judæ an village (perhaps Ain Karim, six miles west of Jerusalem, where a ruin called Mar Zacharias is shown). Elisabeth's unborn babe recognises the mother of the Messiah, and Elisabeth herself knows of Mary's honour, and praises her belief (follow _mg._ in Luke 1:45). The Song of Mary which follows is full of OT reminiscences, especially the Song of Hannah (1 Samuel 2:1).
