35._That it might be fulfilled _Matthew does not mean, that the psalm, which he quotes, is a prediction which relates peculiarly to Christ, but that, as the majesty of the Spirit was displayed in the discourse of the Prophet, in the same manner was his power manifested in the discourse of Christ. The Prophet, when he is about to speak of God’s covenant, by which he adopted the seed of Abraham, of the benefits which he continued to bestow upon his people, and of the whole government of the Church, introduces his subject in lofty terms, _I will open my mouth in parables, _( Psalms 78:2 :) that is, “I will not speak of trifling matters, but will handle with becoming gravity subjects of the highest importance.” When he adds, _I will utter dark sayings, _the meaning is the same; such repetitions being very frequent in the Psalms. 31-35 The scope of the parable of the seed sown, is to show that the beginnings of the gospel would be small, but its latter end would greatly increase; in this way the work of grace in the heart, the kingdom of God within us, would be carried on. In the soul where grace truly is, it will grow really; though perhaps at first not to be discerned, it will at last come to great strength and usefulness. The preaching of the gospel works like leaven in the hearts of those who receive it. The leaven works certainly, so does the word, yet gradually. Verse 35. _BY THE PROPHET_] As the quotation is taken from Psalms 78:2, which is attributed to _Asaph_, he must be the _prophet_ who is meant in the text; and, indeed, he is expressly called a prophet, 1 Chronicles 25:2. Several MSS. have ησαιου, _Isaiah_; but this is a manifest error. Jerome supposes that _Asaph_ was first in the text, and that some ignorant transcriber, not knowing who this _Asaph_ was, inserted the word _Isaiah_; and thus, by attempting to remove an _imaginary_ error, made a _real_ one....

THAT IT MIGHT BE FULFILLED - This is taken from Psalms 78:2. The sense, and not the very words of the Psalm, are given. Christ taught, as did that prophet - Asaph - in parables. The words of Asaph described the manner in which Christ taught, and in this sense it could be said that they were fulfilled. See the notes at Matthew 1:22....

(1) We have here a collection of the Lord's parables, all spoken, as it would appear, at an early period in his ministry, descriptive of the principles of the kingdom of heaven as they make themselves felt in history, and of the way in which those who are brought into contact with the kingdom ought to act.
