Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. WHO, WHEN HE HAD FOUND ONE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE, WENT AND SOLD ALL THAT HE HAD, AND BOUGHT IT. The one pearl of great price, instead of being found by accident, as in the former case, is found by one whose business it is to seek for such, and who finds it just in the way of searching for such treasures. But in both cases the surpassing value of the treasure is alike recognized, and in both all is parted with for it. The object of this brief parable is the same with that of the Tares and Wheat. But as its details are fewer, so its teaching is less rich and varied....

46._And bought it. _By the word _buy _Christ does not mean, that men bring any price, with which they may purchase for themselves the heavenly life; for we know on what condition the Lord invites believers in the book of Isaiah, (Isaiah 55:1,) _Come and buy wine and milk without money and without price. _But though the heavenly life, and every thing that belongs to it, is the free gift of God, yet we are said to _buy _it, when we cheerfully relinquish the desires of the flesh, that nothing may prevent us from obtaining it; as Paul says, that he reckoned all things to be loss and dung, that he might gain Christ, (Philippians 3:8.)...

44-52 Here are four parables. 1. That of the treasure hid in the field. Many slight the gospel, because they look only upon the surface of the field. But all who search the Scriptures, so as in them to find Christ and eternal life, John 5:39, will discover such treasure in this field as makes it unspeakably valuable; they make it their own upon any terms. Though nothing can be given as a price for this salvation, yet much must be given up for the sake of it. 2. All the children of men are busy; one would be rich, another would be honourable, another would be learned; but most are deceived, and take up with counterfeits for pearls. THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN IS LIKE UNTO A MERCHANTMAN - The meaning is, that the proper seeking for salvation, or the proper conduct in reference to religion, is like the conduct of a “merchantman.” In his searches he found one pearl of great value, and sold all his possessions to obtain it. So, says the Saviour, people seeking for happiness and finding the gospel - the pearl of great price - should be willing to sacrifice all other things for this. Pearls are precious stones found in the shells of oysters, chiefly in the East Indies. See the notes at Matthew 7:6. They are valuable on account of their beauty and because they are rare. The value of them is greatly increased by their size. The meaning of this parable is nearly the same as the other. EXPOSITION A few remarks by way of introduction to the characteristic portion of this chapter (Matthew 13:1). (1) We have here a collection of the Lord's parables, all spoken, as it would appear, at an early period in his ministry, descriptive of the principles of the kingdom of heaven as they make themselves felt in history, and of the way in which those who are brought into contact with the kingdom ought to act. FURTHER PARABLES OF THE KINGDOM. The treasure and the pearl (Matthew 13:44) are one, and have one point everything must be sacrificed for the highest good, the Kingdom. This urgent, intense wholeheartedness is characteristic of Jesus. The question of concealment, the conflict between individual salvation and social duty, is not to be pressed here. Yet note that, while one man attains the _summum bonum,_ as it were, by accident, another does so by quest. For the pearl as a metaphor of spiritual treasure _cf. HAVING FOUND ONE PEARL OF GREAT PRICE. He was willing to invest everything he had in this pearl of surpassing beauty and worth. We are all pearl-hunters. We want to find the pearl of happiness and blessing. We are willing to give everything else we have for it. If we think pleasure, or wealth, or fame, or power is the pearl, all else has to give way in order that we may secure it. Often we fancy that we see the pearl before us, but when we get it it is only an imitation. The real pearl is the kingdom in our hearts. He who finds out about it will part with all else to secure it, for we Will "count all else loss so we may win Christ....
