So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. SO (ARE) THE WAYS OF EVERY ONE THAT IS GREEDY OF GAIN - literally, 'of every one greedy of greed;' of everyone snatching at rapine. On "so are the ways" - i:e., such is the portion at last-cf. ....

10-19 Wicked people are zealous in seducing others into the paths of the destroyer: sinners love company in sin. But they have so much the more to answer for. How cautious young people should be! "Consent thou not." Do not say as they say, nor do as they do, or would have thee to do; have no fellowship with them. Who could think that it should be a pleasure to one man to destroy another! See their idea of worldly wealth; but it is neither substance, nor precious. It is the ruinous mistake of thousands, that they overvalue the wealth of this world. Men promise themselves in vain that sin will turn to their advantage. The way of sin is down-hill; men cannot stop themselves. Would young people shun temporal and eternal ruin, let them refuse to take one step in these destructive paths. Men's greediness of gain hurries them upon practices which will not suffer them or others to live out half...

Verse Proverbs 1:19. WHICH _TAKETH AWAY THE LIFE_] A _covetous_ man is in effect, and in the sight of God, a murderer; he wishes to get all the _gain_ that can accrue to any or all who are in the same business that he follows-no matter to him how many families starve in consequence. This is the very case with him who sets up shop after shop in different parts of the same town or neighbourhood, in which he carries on the same business, and endeavours to _undersell_ others in the same trade, that he may get all into his own hand....

Not robbery only, but all forms of covetousness are destructive of true life....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 1:1 PART I. THE TITLE AND SUPERSCRIPTION. The superscription of the Proverbs, which extends from verse 1 to verse 6, furnishes us with an epitome in short and concise language of the general scope and bearing of the book, and points out its specific utility, both to the inexperienced and to those already wise. That is set upon getting riches in an unlawful way, by robberies and murder; his ways will end in the loss of his own blood and life, and in the loss of his immortal soul; this will be what his wicked ways and course of life will bring him to, and what will his gain profit him then? it would be of no use and service to him could he have gained the whole world; [WHICH] TAKETH AWAY THE LIFE OF THE OWNERS THEREOF: or who, even every one of those that are greedy of gain, and will be rich at any rate; such stick not to take away the life of the proper owners of that gain, or money they are greedy of, in order to get it into their own possession; and such wicked practices cannot fail of meeting with a just recompence of reward: or "which" covetous gain, or gain gotten in such a wicked manner, will be the cause of the life of the injuri...

ANALYSIS AND ANNOTATIONS A detailed analysis, as we have made it in other books, cannot be fully made in this collection of proverbs. Most of them are detached and each has a message by itself. To interpret each separately, to point out the many spiritual lessons, as well as prophetic application, to show their relation to other portions of the Word of God and to explain them by incidents taken from the Bible, would require volumes; and even then the spiritual meaning would not be exhausted. PROVERBS 1-9. FIRST SECTION. THE PRAISE OF WISDOM. Proverbs 1:1. Title, either of the whole book, or of this particular collection. The word for PROVERB, _mâ shâ l,_ has a wide significance _in Heb. (see BDB)._ Probably it originally expressed a comparison or allusion, drawn from history or nature, and employed to convey a taunt or satire, hence the rendering taunt-song. which _taketh away_ Rather, IT (greed of gain) TAKETH AWAY THE LIFE OF THEM THAT HAVE IT. It is the destruction of those who are possessed by it. The same Heb. phrase, owner or lord of, is rendered _him that hath it_, in Proverbs 16:22, Comp. Proverbs 22:24, _an angry man_, A.V.; _him that is given to anger_, R.V. lit. _a lord, or owner, of anger_, and Proverbs 23:2, _a man given to appetite_, lit. _an owner of appetite_....
