1-6 The lessons here given are plain, and likely to benefit those who feel their own ignorance, and their need to be taught. If young people take heed to their ways, according to Solomon's Proverbs, they will gain knowledge and discretion. Solomon speaks of the most important points of truth, and a greater than Solomon is here. Christ speaks by his word and by his Spirit. Christ is the Word and the Wisdom of God, and he is made to us wisdom....

Verse Proverbs 1:2. _TO KNOW WISDOM_] That is, this is the design of parabolical writing in _general_; and the _particular_ aim of the present work. This and the two following verses contain the interpretation of the term _parable_, and the author's design in the whole book. The first verse is the _title_, and the next three verses are an explanation of the nature and design of this very important tract. _WISDOM_] חכמה _chochmah_ may mean here, and in every other part of this book, not only that Divine science by which we are enabled to _discover the best end_, and _pursue it by the most proper means_; but also the whole of that _heavenly teaching_ that shows us both ourselves and God, directs us into all truth, and forms the whole of _true religion_. _AND INSTRUCTION_]

The writer’s purpose is to educate. He is writing what might be called an ethical handbook for the young, though not for the young only. Of all books in the Old Testament, this is the one which we may think of as most distinctively educational. A comparison of it with a similar manual, the “sayings of the fathers,” in the Mishna, would help the student to measure the difference between Scriptural and rabbinical teaching. WISDOM - The power by which human personality reaches its highest spiritual perfection, by which all lower elements are brought into harmony with the highest, is presently personified as life-giving and creative. ANALYSIS AND ANNOTATIONS A detailed analysis, as we have made it in other books, cannot be fully made in this collection of proverbs. Most of them are detached and each has a message by itself. To interpret each separately, to point out the many spiritual lessons, as well as prophetic application, to show their relation to other portions of the Word of God and to explain them by incidents taken from the Bible, would require volumes; and even then the spiritual meaning would not be exhausted.
