My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: MY SON, HEAR THE INSTRUCTION OF THY FATHER, AND FORSAKE NOT THE LAW OF THY MOTHER. Even bad parents generally instruct their sons to do right. But good parents, including under the term pious preceptors, are chiefly meant (). Children are reasonable creatures, and when we tell them what they must do, we must tell them why. But they are corrupt and wilful, therefore with the instruction there is need of a law. Verse Proverbs 1:8. _MY SON, HEAR_] _Father_ was the title of _preceptor_, and _son_, that of _disciple_ or _scholar_, among the Jews. But here the reference appears to be to the _children of a family_; the _father_ and the _mother_ have the principal charge, in the first instance, of their children's instruction. It is supposed that these parents have, themselves, the fear of the Lord, and that they are capable of giving the best counsel to their children, and that they set before them a strict example of all godly living. In vain do parents give _good advice_ if their own conduct be not consistent. The _father_ occasionally gives _instruction_; but he is not always in the _family_, many of those occupations which are necessary for the family support being carried on abroad. EXPOSITION PROVERBS 1:1 PART I. THE TITLE AND SUPERSCRIPTION. The superscription of the Proverbs, which extends from verse 1 to verse 6, furnishes us with an epitome in short and concise language of the general scope and bearing of the book, and points out its specific utility, both to the inexperienced and to those already wise. MY SON, HEAR THE INSTRUCTION OF THY FATHER,.... This is not to be understood of God the Father of mankind, and of that law which he has given them, as Jarchi and Gersom interpret it, but of Solomon and his son in a literal sense; and of anyone that came to him for instruction, any pupil, hearer, or reader of his; and it is a direction to all children to hearken to the instruction of their parents, and obey their commands; so, next to the fear and worship of God, he exhorts to obedience to parents, and proceeds just in the same order and method in which the decalogue or ten commands were written; the first table respects God and his worship, and the second follows, which begins with "honour thy father and thy mother", c. Exodus 20:12, which, the apostle says, is "the first commandment with promise", Ephesians 6:1

ANALYSIS AND ANNOTATIONS A detailed analysis, as we have made it in other books, cannot be fully made in this collection of proverbs. Most of them are detached and each has a message by itself. To interpret each separately, to point out the many spiritual lessons, as well as prophetic application, to show their relation to other portions of the Word of God and to explain them by incidents taken from the Bible, would require volumes; and even then the spiritual meaning would not be exhausted. MY SON, HEAR, &C.— It is very observable, how much human laws differ from divine. The former generally provides only that due regard be given by children to their fathers, but takes no notice of mothers; as may be seen in the _Persian_ laws mentioned by Aristotle: the _Roman,_ described in the Digests and Constitutions, and several passages of the Greek philosophers which we find in Epictetus and Simplicius, who consult only the honour of the father.
