Psalms 37:5

_COMMIT THY WAY UNTO THE LORD; TRUST ALSO IN HIM; AND HE SHALL BRING IT TO PASS._ Commit thy way unto the Lord - Hebrew, gol, 'roll thy way upon Yahweh.' The image is of one rolling off from his own shoulders a burden which be is not able to bear, upon the shoulders of another, who is able to bear it (1 Peter 5:7; Psalms 55:22: also 22:10). As a "way" cannot be rolled as a burden, it must hero mean thy doing, thy undertakings, as explained in margin, Proverbs 16:3, 'Roll thy works upon the Lord.' AND HE SHALL BRING IT TO PASS - what thou desirest to be done, but canst not do thyself....

5._Roll _(22) _thy ways upon Jehovah. _Here David illustrates and confirms the doctrine contained in the preceding verse. In order that God may accomplish our desires, it behoves us to cast all our cares upon him in the exercise of hope and patience. Accordingly, we are taught from this passage how to preserve our minds in tranquillity amidst anxieties, dangers, and floods of trouble. There can be no doubt, that by the term _ways _we are here to understand all _affairs _or _businesses. _The man, therefore, who, leaving the issue of all his affairs to the will of God, and who, patiently waiting to receive from his hand whatever he may be pleased to send, whether prosperity or adversity, casts all his cares, and every other burden which he bears, into his bosom; or, in other words, commits to him all his affairs, — such a person _rolls his ways upon Jehovah _Hence, David again inculcate

Verse Psalms 37:5. _COMMIT THY WAY UNTO THE LORD_] גול על יהוה _gol al_ _Yehovah_, _ROLL thy way upon the Lord_: probably, a metaphor taken from the _camel_, who lies down till his load be _rolled_ upon him. _HE SHALL BRING_ IT _TO PASS._] יעשה _yaaseh_, "He will _work_." Trust God, and he will work for thee....

COMMIT THY WAY UNTO THE - Lord. Margin, as in Hebrew, “Roll thy way upon, the Lord.” Compare the notes at Psalms 22:8, where the marg., as the Hebrew, is, “He rolled himself on the Lord.” See also 1 Peter 5:7. The idea is that of rolling a heavy burden from ourselves on another, or laying it upon him, so that he may bear it. The burden which we have not got strength to bear we may lay on God. The term “way” means properly the act of treading or going; then, a way or path; then, a course of life, or the manner in which one lives; and the reference here is to the whole course of life, or all that can affect life; all our plans or conduct; all the issues or results of those plans. EXPOSITION THIS is another of the alphabetical psalms (see above, Psalms 9:1; Psalms 25:1; and 34.), and, though more free from irregularities than the previous ones, is not altogether without them. While, generally, each letter heads a stanza consisting of two verses, there are three occasions on which the stanza assigned to a letter is formed of only one verse (see Psalms 37:7, Psalms 37:20, and Psalms 37:34). COMMIT THY WAY UNTO THE LORD,.... Or "thy works", as in Proverbs 16:3; that is, all the affairs and business of life, which are a man's ways in which he walks; not that men should sit still, be inactive, and do nothing, and leave all to be done by the Lord; but should seek direction of God in everything engaged in, and for strength and assistance to perform it, and go on in it, and depend upon him for success, and give him all the glory, without trusting to any thing done by them: or, as some render the words, "reveal thy way unto the Lord" n; not that God is ignorant of the ways of men, and of their affairs, and of their wants and necessities, but it is their duty to ask, and it is his delight to hear; they may come and use freedom with him, and tell him their whole case, and leave it with him, believing he will supply all their need: or, as others render it, "roll thy way on

Psalms 37:1. _Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity._ A common temptation. Many of God's saints have suffered from it. Learn from their experience. Avoid this danger. There really is no power in it, when once the heart has come to rest in God. But it is a sad affliction until the heart does get its rest. «Fret not because of evildoers.» Psalms 37:2. _For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD;_ Make him thy delight, and take care that thou do really delight.
