_AND THE PRIESTS COULD NOT ENTER INTO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD, BECAUSE THE GLORY OF THE LORD HAD FILLED THE LORD'S HOUSE._ The priests could not enter. Both from awe of the miraculous fire that was burning on the altar, and from the dense cloud that enveloped the sanctuary, they were unable for some time to perform their usual functions (see the notes at 1 Kings 8:10). But afterward, their courage and confidence being revived, they approached the altar, and busied themselves in the offering of an immense number of sacrifices....

EXPOSITION This chapter is occupied with three subjects. _First, _the description of Heaven's acceptance of the dedicated temple by fire (2 Chronicles 7:1). _Secondly, _the_ _sacrifices and glad feasting of Solomon and all Israel for several days (2 Chronicles 7:4). They went in to carry the ark thither, but not being able to stand to minister, they came out, and could not reenter: BECAUSE THE GLORY OF THE LORD HAD FILLED THE LORD'S HOUSE; both the holy place, and the holy of holies, see 1 Kings 8:10....

AND THE PRIESTS COULD NOT ENTER INTO THE HOUSE OF THE LORD. — Hardly a different assertion from that of 2 Chronicles 5:14 (“ the priests could not _stand to minister_”); the cause in both instances being the same, and expressed in the same words (1 Kings 8:11). But it is quite plain that the writer intends to record in 2 Chronicles 5:7 two distinct appearances of the Divine glory, one before and one after the Prayer of Consecration, both of which were attended by the same effects upon the ministering priests....
