_AND THEY BLESSED REBEKAH, AND SAID UNTO HER, THOU ART OUR SISTER, BE THOU THE MOTHER OF THOUSANDS OF MILLIONS, AND LET THY SEED POSSESS THE GATE OF THOSE WHICH HATE THEM._ And they blessed Rebekah. Their parting benediction consists of two parts-the first, BE THOU THE MOTHER OF THOUSANDS OF MILLIONS. This, of course, is an hyperbolical expression, intimating a hope that she would have a numerous posterity, which was considered a most honoured position for a wife to occupy; and the second, that her family might enjoy prosperity and independence (see the note at Genesis 22:17)....

Verse Genesis 24:60. _BE THOU THE MOTHER OF THOUSANDS OF MILLIONS_] לאלפי רבבה _lealphey rebabah_, for thousands ten thousand, or _for myriads_ _of thousands_, a large family being ever considered, in ancient times, as a proof of the peculiar blessing and favour of God. Similar addresses to a daughter, when she is going from her father's house to live with her husband, are very common among the _Hindoos_; such as, "Be thou the mother of a son," "Be thou the wife of a king," c.
