Genesis 25:11

_AND IT CAME TO PASS AFTER THE DEATH OF ABRAHAM, THAT GOD BLESSED HIS SON ISAAC; AND ISAAC DWELT BY THE WELL LAHAI-ROI._ After the death of Abraham, that God blessed his son Isaac. This is intended as a general statement of the prosperity which attended Isaac as his father's heir; and as it relates to the patrimonial inheritance, not to the gifts of grace, it is ascribed to the blessing of Elohim (God), not of Yahweh (the Lord), the covenant guide and benefactor of the Hebrew patriarch....

11-18 Ishmael had twelve sons, whose families became distinct tribes. They peopled a very large country that lay between Egypt and Assyria, called Arabia. The number and strength of this family were the fruit of the promise, made to Hagar and to Abraham, concerning Ishmael....

Verse Genesis 25:11. _GOD BLESSED HIS SON ISAAC_] The peculiar blessings and influences by which Abraham had been distinguished now rested upon Isaac; but how little do we hear in him of the work of faith, the patience of hope, and the labour of love! Only one Abraham and one Christ ever appeared among men; there have been some successful _imitators_, there should have been many....

Yet more and more, both with spiritual and temporal blessings; showing hereby, that, though Abraham was dead, he was not unmindful of his covenant, which should be established with Isaac, Genesis 17:19: AND ISAAC DWELT BY THE WELL LAHAIROI; which was near the wilderness of Beersheba and Paran, where Ishmael dwelt; so that they were not far from one another, see Genesis 16:14....

CHAPTER 25:1-11 ABRAHAM'S POSTERITY FROM KETURAH AND HIS DEATH _ 1. Abraham's offspring from Keturah (Genesis 25:1)_ 2. Isaac the heir (Genesis 25:5) 3. Abraham's death and burial (Genesis 25:7) Abraham's marriage to Keturah and the offspring from her concludes the history of this remarkable character. That this took place after Isaac's marriage (typifying the marriage of the Lamb) makes it very interesting. After the church is completed and the present age ends the seed of Abraham will be blessed for the nations of the earth and nations will be born and walk in the light. This will be the result after Israel's restoration. Then all the families of the earth will be blessed in Abraham's seed

Gunkel has given strong reasons for holding that J is here made up of two main sources, one connecting Abraham with Hebron, the other with Beersheba and the Negeb. The former associates Abraham with Lot. (For details, see ICC.) On the interpretation to be placed on the figures of Abraham and the patriarchs, see the Introduction. The interest, which has hitherto been diffused over the fortunes of mankind in general, is now concentrated on Abraham and his posterity, the principle of election narrowing it down to Isaac, Ishmael being left aside, and then to Jacob, Esau being excluded....

_God blessed Isaac_ The fulfilment of Genesis 17:21. The traditions of Isaac are very meagre. Here, as in Genesis 24:62, his dwelling-place is at Beer-lahai-roi, which was also connected with Ishmael (Genesis 16:14). In Genesis 35:27, Hebron is spoken of as the dwelling-place of Isaac at a later period of his life....
