_AND ABRAHAM GAVE ALL THAT HE HAD UNTO ISAAC_ _ AND ABRAHAM GAVE ALL THAT HE HAD UNTO ISAAC._ Gave unto Isaac ... unto the sons of the concubines. While the chief part of the inheritance went to Isaac, the other sons, Ishmael included, migrating to the "East country" - i:e., Arabia, at first perhaps restricted to the wilderness of Beer-sheba and Paran, but in the widest sense embracing the whole of the two portions of the Arabian peninsula, Arabia Petraea and Deserta-received each a portion of the patrimony, perhaps in cattle and other things. Whether such a distribution was customary (Luke 15:12), or merely a prudential arrangement of Abraham's, the settlement must have given satisfaction, since it is still the rule followed among the pastoral tribes. Moses relates, that when Abraham was about to die, he formed the design of removing all cause of strife among his sons after his death, by constituting Isaac his sole heir, and dismissing the rest with suitable gifts. This dismissal was, indeed, apparently harsh and cruel; but it was agreeable to the appointment and decree of God, in order that the entire possession of the land might remain for the posterity of Isaac. CHAPTER 25:1-11 ABRAHAM'S POSTERITY FROM KETURAH AND HIS DEATH _ 1. Abraham's offspring from Keturah (Genesis 25:1)_ 2. Isaac the heir (Genesis 25:5) 3. Abraham's death and burial (Genesis 25:7) Abraham's marriage to Keturah and the offspring from her concludes the history of this remarkable character. That this took place after Isaac's marriage (typifying the marriage of the Lamb) makes it very interesting. THE DESCENDANTS OF ABRAHAM AND KETURAN. The section belongs apparently to a late stratum of J. The obvious meaning is that Abraham married again and had six children after Sarah's death. This is remarkable in view of the fact that the birth of Isaac was effected only by the miraculous intervention of Providence. Abraham's Descendants by Keturah This section is from J. The children by a concubine represent tribal relationship of a secondary and less intimate character. The domestic tradition in these verses preserves the recollection of an early connexion between the ancestors of Israel and the clans or tribes on the borders of the North Arabian desert....
