_AND JACOB SOD POTTAGE: AND ESAU CAME FROM THE FIELD, AND HE WAS FAINT:_ Jacob sod pottage - a soup made of a decoction of lentiles or small beans, called 'Adas (cf. 2 Samuel 17:28), which is very common in Egypt and Syria, particularly among country people and natives when traveling (Robinson's 'Biblical Researches'). It is probable that Jacob made use of Egyptian beans, which he had procured as a dainty; because Esau was a stranger to it; and hence, he said, 'Feed me, I pray thee, with that red, red (thing).' The Hebrew, "red," includes the idea of a brown or chocolate colour. This lentile soup is very palatable, particularly when accompanied with melted butter and pepper; and to the weary hunter, faint through hunger, the odour of the smoking dish must have been irresistibly tempting....

29._And Jacob sod pottage_. This narration differs little from the sport of children. Jacob is cooking pottage; his brother returns from hunting weary and famishing, and barters his birthright for food. What kind of bargain, I pray, was this? Jacob ought of his own accord to have satisfied the hunger of his brother. When being asked, he refuses to do so: who would not condemn him for his inhumanity? In compelling Esau to surrender his right of primogeniture, he seems to make an illicit and frivolous compact. God, however, put the disposition of Esau to the proof in a matter of small moment; and still farther, designed to present an instance of Jacob’s piety, or, (to speak more properly,) he brought to light what lay hid in both. Many indeed are mistaken in suspending the cause of Jacob’s election on the fact, that God foresaw some worthiness in him; and in thinking that Esau was reprobat...

29-34 We have here the bargain made between Jacob and Esau about the right, which was Esau's by birth, but Jacob's by promise. It was for a spiritual privilege; and we see Jacob's desire of the birth-right, but he sought to obtain it by crooked courses, not like his character as a plain man. He was right, that he coveted earnestly the best gifts; he was wrong, that he took advantage of his brother's need. The inheritance of their father's worldly goods did not descend to Jacob, and was not meant in this proposal. But it includeth the future possession of the land of Canaan by his children's children, and the covenant made with Abraham as to Christ the promised Seed. Verse Genesis 25:29. _SOD POTTAGE_] יזד נזיד _yazed nazid_, he boiled a boiling; and this we are informed, Genesis 25:34, was of עדשים _adashim_, what the Septuagint render φακον, and we, following them and the Vulgate _lens_, translate _lentiles_, a sort of pulse. Dr. Shaw casts some light on this passage, speaking of the inhabitants of Barbary. "Beans, lentiles, kidney beans, and _garvancos_," says he, "are the chiefest of their pulse kind; beans, when boiled and stewed with oil and garlic, are the principal food of persons of all distinctions; lentiles are dressed in the same manner with beans, dissolving easily into a mass, and making a pottage of a _chocolate colour_.
