Onkelos interprets these words of persons dwelling in _camps, tents_, and _islands_; and Jonathan ben Uzziel calls them _merchants, artificers_, and _heads_ or _chiefs of_ _people_....

From Dedan came the Dedanim or Dedanites, spoken of with the Arabians in Isaiah 21:13; Junius thinks Adada in Palmyrene of Syria had its name from this man, and in which country is the mountain Aladan or Alladadan. CHAPTER 25:1-11 ABRAHAM'S POSTERITY FROM KETURAH AND HIS DEATH _ 1. Abraham's offspring from Keturah (Genesis 25:1)_ 2. Isaac the heir (Genesis 25:5) 3. THE DESCENDANTS OF ABRAHAM AND KETURAN. The section belongs apparently to a late stratum of J. The obvious meaning is that Abraham married again and had six children after Sarah's death. This is remarkable in view of the fact that the birth of Isaac was effected only by the miraculous intervention of Providence. Midian (Exodus 2:15 *) is the best known of the peoples mentioned, the Dedanites and Sabæ ans also occur several times....

Abraham's Descendants by Keturah This section is from J. The children by a concubine represent tribal relationship of a secondary and less intimate character. The domestic tradition in these verses preserves the recollection of an early connexion between the ancestors of Israel and the clans or tribes on the borders of the North Arabian desert....
