There is a brief recapitulation of Isaac's age and marriage, according to the usual method of the sacred historian when entering on the х_ TOLªDOWT _ (H8435) (cf. Genesis 2:4; Genesis 5:1; Genesis 10:1)] generations of any one....

19._These are the generations of Isaac_. Because what Moses has said concerning the Ishmaelites was incidental, he now returns to the principal subject of the history, for the purpose of describing the progress of the Church. And in the first place, he repeats that Isaac’s wife was taken from Mesopotamia. He expressly calls her the sister of Laban the Syrian, who was hereafter to become the father-in-law of Jacob, and concerning whom he had many things to relate. But it is chiefly worthy of observation that he declares Rebekah to have been barren during the early years of her marriage. And we shall afterwards see that her barrenness continued, not for three or four, but for twenty years, in order that her very despair of offspring might give greater lustre to the sudden granting of the blessing. But nothing seems less accordant with reason, than that the propagation of the Church should...

19-26 Isaac seems not to have been much tried, but to have spent his days in quietness. Jacob and Esau were prayed for; their parents, after being long childless, obtained them by prayer. The fulfilment of God's promise is always sure, yet it is often slow. The faith of believers is tried, their patience exercised, and mercies long waited for are more welcome when they come. Isaac and Rebekah kept in view the promise of all nations being blessed in their posterity, therefore were not only desirous of children, but anxious concerning every thing which seemed to mark their future character. In all our doubts we should inquire of the Lord by prayer. In many of our conflicts with sin and temptation, we may adopt Rebekah's words, "If it be so, why am I thus?" If a child of God, why so careless or carnal? If not a child of God, why so afraid of, or so burdened with sin?...

Verse Genesis 25:19. _THESE ARE THE GENERATIONS OF ISAAC_] This is the history of Isaac and his family. Here the _sixth_ section of the law begins, called תולדת יעחק _toledoth yitschak_; as the _fifth_, called חיי שרה _chaiye Sarah_, which begins with Genesis 23:1, ends at the preceding verse....
