If Jacob suspected that the dream originated in vain ambition, he rightly rebuked his son; but if he knew that God was the author of the dream, he ought not to have expostulated with him. But that he did know it, may be hence inferred, because he is afterwards said seriously to have considered it. For Moses, making a distinction between him and his sons, says that _they _breathed nothing but the virus of envy; while _he _revolved in his own mind what this might mean; which could not have happened, unless he had been affected with reverence. 5-11 God gave Joseph betimes the prospect of his advancement, to support and comfort him under his long and grievous troubles. Observe, Joseph dreamed of his preferment, but he did not dream of his imprisonment. Thus many young people, when setting out in the world, think of nothing but prosperity and pleasure, and never dream of trouble. JOSEPH HATED BY HIS BROTHERS ON ACCOUNT OF HIS TALEBEARING, HIS FATHER'S Partiality, AND HIS DREAMS OF SUPREMACY. Genesis 37:1_ a_ is certainly from P, but probably Genesis 37:2 b also. It gives a third reason for the hatred which Joseph excited; the rather priggish Joseph tells tales to Jacob about the children of his concubines. Nothing more is preserved from P till we reach Genesis 41:46_ a_. J's story (Genesis 37:3 f.) lays the blame on Jacob's partiality: he loved him because he was the son of his old age a curious statement in view of the fact that some of his half-brothers were younger than himself. The meaning is, "he was keeping sheep, being still a lad, with his brethren, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah," i.e. Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. Joseph's home at this time seems to have been at Hebron (cf. Genesis 35:27). The life of Joseph, the elder son of the favourite wife, spent in the field with the sons of the concubines, was not likely to be happy. _the evil report_ What this was, does not appear; cf. 1 Samuel 2:23. HE TOLD IT TO HIS FATHER, &C.— The old man, it is evident, was struck with the dream, and doubted not of its bearing an important meaning; _he observed the saying;_ but fearing, perhaps, lest the young man might be too much elevated by the idea of superiority over his brethren, and thus incur their higher resentment, he thought fit to _rebuke_ him, and to insinuate an impossibility in the completion, as the _mother_ was dead, whom the moon was understood to signify; _shall I and thy mother,_ &c.
