_AND THEY TOOK JOSEPH'S COAT, AND KILLED A KID OF THE GOATS, AND DIPPED THE COAT IN THE BLOOD;_ They took Joseph's coat. The commission of one sin necessarily leads to another to conceal it; and the scheme of deception which the sons of Jacob planned and practiced on their aged father was a necessary consequence of the atrocious crime they had perpetrated. What a wonder that their cruel sneer, "thy son's coat," and their forced efforts to comfort him, did not awaken suspicion! But extreme grief, like every other passion, is blind; and Jacob, great as his affliction was, did allow himself to indulge his sorrow more than became one who believed in the government of a supreme and all-wise Disposer. 31-36 When Satan has taught men to commit one sin, he teaches them to try to conceal it with another; to hide theft and murder, with lying and false oaths: but he that covers his sin shall not prosper long. Joseph's brethren kept their own and one another's counsel for some time; but their villany came to light at last, and it is here published to the world. To grieve their father, they sent him Joseph's coat of colours; and he hastily thought, on seeing the bloody coat, that Joseph was rent in pieces. Verse Genesis 37:33. _JOSEPH IS WITHOUT DOUBT RENT IN PIECES!_] It is likely he inferred this from the _lacerated_ state of the coat, which, in order the better to cover their wickedness, they had not only besmeared with the blood of the goat, but it is probable reduced to _tatters_. And what must a father's heart have felt in such a case! As this coat is rent, so is the body of my beloved son rent in pieces! and _Jacob rent his clothes_....

JOSEPH IS WITHOUT DOUBT RENT IN PIECES. Jacob at once recognized the coat, and drew the inference that his sons wished. The coat was not only bloody, but probably lacerated. It is likely that be inferred from the lacerated state of the coat that Joseph had been torn in pieces....

(JE). Joseph sold into Egypt 2 b (J). _and he was a lad with_, &c. The English here gives an awkward rendering. The meaning is, "he was keeping sheep, being still a lad, with his brethren, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah," i.e. Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. Joseph's home at this time seems to have been at Hebron (cf. Genesis 35:27). The life of Joseph, the elder son of the favourite wife, spent in the field with the sons of the concubines, was not likely to be happy. _the evil report_ What this was, does not appear; cf. 1 Samuel 2:23.
