23-30 They threw Joseph into a pit, to perish there with hunger and cold; so cruel were their tender mercies. They slighted him when he was in distress, and were not grieved for the affliction of Joseph, see Amos 6:6; for when he was pining in the pit, they sat down to eat bread. They felt no remorse of conscience for the sin. But the wrath of man shall praise God, and the remainder of wrath he will restrain, Psalms 76:10. Joseph's brethren were wonderfully restrained from murdering him, and their selling him as wonderfully turned to God's praise....

Into the same that Reuben pointed to them, whose counsel they gladly took and readily executed, supposing he meant the same thing they did, starving him to death: AND THE PIT [WAS] EMPTY, [THERE WAS] NO WATER IN IT; only serpents and scorpions, as the Targum of Jonathan; and Jarchi adds, this remark, that there was no water in it, seems to be made either to furnish out a reason why Reuben directed to it, that he might be the more easily got out of it, and not be in danger of losing his life at once, or of being drowned in it; or else to show the uncomfortable situation he was in, having not so much as a drop of water to refresh him; see Zechariah 9:11. THEY TOOK HIM AND CAST HIM INTO. PIT. The pit was doubtless an empty well or cistern, dug in that imperfectly watered country for the purpose of catching water. The design of the brethren, except Reuben, seems to have been to leave Joseph there to perish. Any one who will read Chapter s 34, 35, 37 and 38 will see that the ten older brethren of Joseph were "hard boys." Passing by this treatment of their brother, Reuben was guilty of incest, Judah's conduct in the case of his daughter-in-law was abominable, and Simeon and Levi were guilty of pitiless cruelty and savage ferocity. But the worst elements of their depraved character show themselves in the treatment of their brother....

(JE). Joseph sold into Egypt 2 b (J). _and he was a lad with_, &c. The English here gives an awkward rendering. The meaning is, "he was keeping sheep, being still a lad, with his brethren, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah," i.e. Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. Joseph's home at this time seems to have been at Hebron (cf. Genesis 35:27). The life of Joseph, the elder son of the favourite wife, spent in the field with the sons of the concubines, was not likely to be happy. _the evil report_ What this was, does not appear; cf. 1 Samuel 2:23.
