5-11 God gave Joseph betimes the prospect of his advancement, to support and comfort him under his long and grievous troubles. Observe, Joseph dreamed of his preferment, but he did not dream of his imprisonment. Thus many young people, when setting out in the world, think of nothing but prosperity and pleasure, and never dream of trouble. His brethren rightly interpreted the dream, though they abhorred the interpretation of it. While they committed crimes in order to defeat it, they were themselves the instruments of accomplishing it. Thus the Jews understood what Christ said of his kingdom. Determined that he should not reign over them, they consulted to put him to death; and by his crucifixion, made way for the exaltation they designed to prevent....

Verse Genesis 37:7. _WE_ WERE _BINDING SHEAVES IN THE FIELD_] Though in these early times we read little of _tillage_, yet it is evident from this circumstance that it was practised by Jacob and his sons. The whole of this dream is so very plain as to require no comment, unless we could suppose that the _sheaves of grain_ might have some reference to the _plenty_ in Egypt under Joseph's superintendence, and the scarcity in Canaan, which obliged the brethren to go down to Egypt for corn, where the dream was most literally fulfilled, his brethren there _bowing_ in the most abject manner before him....

JOSEPH HATED BY HIS BROTHERS ON ACCOUNT OF HIS TALEBEARING, HIS FATHER'S Partiality, AND HIS DREAMS OF SUPREMACY. Genesis 37:1_ a_ is certainly from P, but probably Genesis 37:2 b also. It gives a third reason for the hatred which Joseph excited; the rather priggish Joseph tells tales to Jacob about the children of his concubines. Nothing more is preserved from P till we reach Genesis 41:46_ a_. J's story (Genesis 37:3 f.) lays the blame on Jacob's partiality: he loved him because he was the son of his old age a curious statement in view of the fact that some of his half-brothers were younger than himself. The meaning is, "he was keeping sheep, being still a lad, with his brethren, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah," i.e. Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. Joseph's home at this time seems to have been at Hebron (cf. Genesis 35:27). The life of Joseph, the elder son of the favourite wife, spent in the field with the sons of the concubines, was not likely to be happy. _the evil report_ What this was, does not appear; cf. 1 Samuel 2:23.
