8._Shalt thou indeed reign over us? _Here it is plainly shown to us that the paternal favor of God towards the elect, is like a fan to excite against them the enmity of the world. JOSEPH HATED BY HIS BROTHERS ON ACCOUNT OF HIS TALEBEARING, HIS FATHER'S Partiality, AND HIS DREAMS OF SUPREMACY. Genesis 37:1_ a_ is certainly from P, but probably Genesis 37:2 b also. It gives a third reason for the hatred which Joseph excited; the rather priggish Joseph tells tales to Jacob about the children of his concubines. Nothing more is preserved from P till we reach Genesis 41:46_ a_. J's story (Genesis 37:3 f.) lays the blame on Jacob's partiality: he loved him because he was the son of his old age a curious statement in view of the fact that some of his half-brothers were younger than himself. The meaning is, "he was keeping sheep, being still a lad, with his brethren, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah," i.e. Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. Joseph's home at this time seems to have been at Hebron (cf. Genesis 35:27). The life of Joseph, the elder son of the favourite wife, spent in the field with the sons of the concubines, was not likely to be happy. _the evil report_ What this was, does not appear; cf. 1 Samuel 2:23.
