_AND THEY TOOK JOSEPH'S COAT, AND KILLED A KID OF THE GOATS, AND DIPPED THE COAT IN THE BLOOD;_ They took Joseph's coat. The commission of one sin necessarily leads to another to conceal it; and the scheme of deception which the sons of Jacob planned and practiced on their aged father was a necessary consequence of the atrocious crime they had perpetrated. What a wonder that their cruel sneer, "thy son's coat," and their forced efforts to comfort him, did not awaken suspicion! JACOB RENT HIS CLOTHES. Rending the clothes was an expression of the deepest feeling, whether of sorrow or indignation. Reuben rent his clothes when he returned and found the pit empty in which Joseph had been cast. The high priest rent his clothes when Jesus declared before the Sanhedrim that he was the Son of God. When Abner was slain King, David commanded Joab the murderer, "and all the people with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner." PUT SACKCLOTH UPON HIS LOINS. Sackcloth was the usual garb of mourning, as in our times crape is worn....

(JE). Joseph sold into Egypt 2 b (J). _and he was a lad with_, &c. The English here gives an awkward rendering. The meaning is, "he was keeping sheep, being still a lad, with his brethren, the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah," i.e. Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. Joseph's home at this time seems to have been at Hebron (cf. Genesis 35:27). JOSEPH IS HATED BY HIS BRETHREN AND SOLD INTO EGYPT With the exception of a few passages chiefly in Genesis 46, 49, the rest of the book of Genesis is taken from the Primitive source. The chief event with which the rest of Genesis is concerned, namely, the migration of Israel to Egypt, displays the working out of God's purposes declared in Genesis 15. In Egypt the chosen race grew in peace from a tribe to a nation, instead of having to encounter the hostility of the Canaanites as their numbers increased and their aspirations became known. In Egypt, too, they came in contact with a highly civilised and law-abiding nation, and learnt from them much of the highest value for the future. There are many points in the history of Joseph which remind us of Christ, e.g. in his being the loved son of his father, in his being sent to his brethren who hated and rejected him, in his humiliation
