Verse 35. _WOMEN RECEIVED THEIR DEAD_] As did the widow of _Zarephath_, 1 Kings 17:21, and the _Shunammite_, 2 Kings 4:34. What other cases under all the above heads the apostle might have in view, we know not. _OTHERS WERE TORTURED_] ετυμπανισθησαν. This is a word concerning the meaning of which the critics are not agreed. τυμπανον signifies a stick, or _baton_, which was used in _bastinadoing_ criminals. And τυμπανιζω signifies to _beat_ _violently_, and is thus explained by the best lexicographers. After considering what others have written on this subject, I am inclined to think that the _bastinado_ on the _soles of the feet_ is what is here designed. Hebrews 11:1. _Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
