17-26 How many are there in our assemblies, where the gospel is preached, who do not sit under the word, but sit by! It is to them as a tale that is told them, not as a message that is sent to them. Observe the duties taught and recommended to us by the history of the paralytic. In applying to Christ, we must be very pressing and urgent; that is an evidence of faith, and is very pleasing to Christ, and prevailing with him. Give us, Lord, the same kind of faith with respect to thy ability and willingness to heal our souls. Give us to desire the pardon of sin more than any earthly blessing, or life itself. Enable us to believe thy power to forgive sins; then will our souls cheerfully arise and go where thou pleasest....

Verse Luke 5:17. _ON A CERTAIN DAY_] This was when he was at Capernaum. See Mark 2:1. _THE POWER OF THE LORD_] Δυναμις Κυριου The _mighty_ or _miraculous_ power of the Lord, i.e. of Jesus, was there to heal them - as many as were diseased either in body or soul. Where the _teaching_ of _Christ_ is, there also is the _power_ of Christ to _redeem_ and _save_....

EXPOSITION When St. Luke compiled his Gospel, many of the circumstances connected with the early relations of the leaders of Christianity with their Founder were so well known, and had been so often repeated, that it seemed unnecessary to rehearse them afresh; hence to us the seeming abruptness of the introduction of Simon (Peter), James, and John in the scene now about to be related. In the preceding, the healing of Simon's wife's mother of a great fever is related without any explanation, as though Simon Peter's connection with the Lord was a fact too well known to require any comment or explanation. The association of Jesus and these chosen men seems to have commenced as follows: Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew (sons of Jona), John and James (the sons of Zebedee and Salome), belonged to fisher families dwelling on the banks of the Lake of Gennesaret. THE HEALING OF THE PARALYTIC (Mark 2:1 *, Matthew 9:1 *). All three accounts are in close agreement. Lk. however introduces at the outset Pharisees and teachers of the law from all over Galilee as well as from Judæ a and Jerusalem. The last clause of Luke 5:17 is peculiar; literally, the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal with. In Luke 5:19 Lk. rewrites Mk.'s description of how the sufferer was lowered through an aperture in the tiles (none were removed). Mt. omits it.
