No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better. NO MAN ALSO HAVING DRUNK OLD WINE STRAIGHTWAY DESIRETH NEW; FOR HE SAITH, THE OLD IS BETTER. These are just examples of incongruities in common things. As men's good sense leads them to avoid these in ordinary life, so are there analogous incongruities in spiritual things which the wise will shun. But what has this to do with the question about fasting? Much every way. Luke 5:39._And no person who has drunk old wine. _This statement is given by Luke alone, and is undoubtedly connected with the preceding discourse. Though commentators have tortured it in a variety of ways, I take it simply as a warning to the Pharisees not to attach undue importance to a received custom. For how comes it that wine, the taste of which remains unaltered, is not equally agreeable to every palate, but because custom and habit form the taste? Hence it follows, that Christ’s manner of acting towards his disciples is not less worthy of approbation, because it has less show and splendor: as _old wine, _though it does not foam with the sharpness of n_ew wine, _is not less agreeable on that account, or less fitted for the nourishment of the body....

Verse Luke 5:39. _THE OLD IS BETTER._] χρηστοτερος - Is more _agreeable_ to the _taste_ or _palate_. _Herodotus_, the scholiast on _Aristophanes,_ and _Homer_, use the word in this sense. The _old_ _wine_, among the rabbins, was _the wine of three leaves_; that is, wine three years old; because, from the time that the vine had produced that wine, it had put forth its leaves three times.
