17-26 How many are there in our assemblies, where the gospel is preached, who do not sit under the word, but sit by! It is to them as a tale that is told them, not as a message that is sent to them. Observe the duties taught and recommended to us by the history of the paralytic. In applying to Christ, we must be very pressing and urgent; that is an evidence of faith, and is very pleasing to Christ, and prevailing with him. Give us, Lord, the same kind of faith with respect to thy ability and willingness to heal our souls. Give us to desire the pardon of sin more than any earthly blessing, or life itself. Enable us to believe thy power to forgive sins; then will our souls cheerfully arise and go where thou pleasest....

Verse 26. _STRANGE THINGS_] παραδοξα, _paradoxes_. A paradox is something that appears _false_ and _absurd_, but is not _really_ so: or, something _contrary_ to the _commonly received opinion_. We have seen _wonders_ wrought which seem _impossible_; and we should conclude them to be _tricks_ and _illusions_, were it not for the indisputable evidence we have of their _reality_....

EXPOSITION When St. Luke compiled his Gospel, many of the circumstances connected with the early relations of the leaders of Christianity with their Founder were so well known, and had been so often repeated, that it seemed unnecessary to rehearse them afresh; hence to us the seeming abruptness of the introduction of Simon (Peter), James, and John in the scene now about to be related. In the preceding, the healing of Simon's wife's mother of a great fever is related without any explanation, as though Simon Peter's connection with the Lord was a fact too well known to require any comment or explanation. The association of Jesus and these chosen men seems to have commenced as follows: Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew (sons of Jona), John and James (the sons of Zebedee and Salome), belonged to fisher families dwelling on the banks of the Lake of Gennesaret. Not the Pharisees, and doctors of the law, but the common people: AND WERE FILLED WITH FEAR; of the Divine Being, whose presence and power they were sensible must be in this case: SAYING, WE HAVE SEEN STRANGE THINGS TODAY; paradoxes, things wonderful, unthought of, unexpected, and incredible by carnal reason, and what were never seen, nor known before; as that a man, who was so enfeebled by the palsy, that he was obliged to be carried on a bed by four men, yet, on a sudden, by a word speaking, rose up, and carried his bed, on his back, home....

Luke 5:1. _And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, and saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets._ Before folding them up, as if they intended to do no more with them just then, as they had been working all night in vain. THE HEALING OF THE PARALYTIC (Mark 2:1 *, Matthew 9:1 *). All three accounts are in close agreement. Lk. however introduces at the outset Pharisees and teachers of the law from all over Galilee as well as from Judæ a and Jerusalem. The last clause of Luke 5:17 is peculiar; literally, the power of the Lord was present for Him to heal with. In Luke 5:19 Lk. rewrites Mk.'s description of how the sufferer was lowered through an aperture in the tiles (none were removed). Mt. omits it.
