Psalms 69:14

_BUT AS FOR ME, MY PRAYER IS UNTO THEE, O LORD, IN AN ACCEPTABLE TIME: O GOD, IN THE MULTITUDE OF THY MERCY HEAR ME, IN THE TRUTH OF THY SALVATION._ -The prayer for deliverance renewed from Psalms 69:1; Psalms 69:5, more fully on the basis already laid down-namely, that it was for the sake of God he had been brought into trouble. 14._Deliver me from the mire, that I may not sink. _The Psalmist repeats the same similitude which he had used before, but in a different manner. He had previously said that he was sunk in the mire, and now he prays that he may not sink in it. In short, he now prays that those things may not now befall him which he had formerly complained of as having befallen him. But it is very easy to reconcile this diversity of statement; for in the opening of the psalm he spake according to his actual feeling and experience; but now, looking to the issue, although living in the midst of death, he cherishes the hope of deliverance. This is expressed still more clearly in the last clause of the 15th verse, where he prays, _Let not the pit close its mouth upon me; _which is as if he had said, Let not the great multitude and weight of my afflictions overwhelm me, and let not sorrow swallow me up....

13-21 Whatever deep waters of affliction or temptation we sink into, whatever floods of trouble or ungodly men seem ready to overwhelm us, let us persevere in prayer to our Lord to save us. The tokens of God's favour to us are enough to keep our spirits from sinking in the deepest outward troubles. If we think well of God, and continue to do so under the greatest hardships, we need not fear but he will do well for us. And if at any time we are called on to suffer reproach and shame, for Christ's sake, this may be our comfort, that he knows it. It bears hard on one that knows the worth of a good name, to be oppressed with a bad one; but when we consider what a favour it is to be accounted worthy to suffer shame for the name of Jesus, we shall see that there is no reason why it should be heart-breaking to us. EXPOSITION THIS is the cry of one suffering severely from men, partly on account of his own sins (Psalms 69:5), but mainly for the sake of God (Psalms 69:7). It is said to be "written in the style of Jeremiah" (Cheyne); but the resemblance to several Davidical psalms, especially Psalms 22:1, Psalms 25:1, and Psalms 40:1, is admitted; and the expression, "Al Shoshannim," in the "title," connects it also with Psalms 45:1 :Moreover, the "title

DELIVER ME OUT OF THE MIRE, AND LET ME NOT SINK,.... We shall read together at this time a part of the 69 th Psalm, and afterwards two passages in the New Testament. Although there is no doubt that this Psalm is intended to describe a very large class of sufferers, but we think it never had its full meaning perfectly carried out, until our blessed Lord and Master suffered at the hands of men. We shall read the Psalm believing that it is full of Christ. It is absolutely certain that we have references here to his advent, his passion, and his resurrection. LXIX. A PRAYER FOR DELIVERANCE AND REVENGE. The author was a pious Jew, burning with zeal for the purity of the Temple worship (Psalms 69:9). He was a representative man, so that the reproaches of those that reproached Yahweh fell upon him. If he was defeated, the pious throughout Israel would lose hope. He was in great danger of his life, and that from his fellow-Jews (Psalms 69:8).
