Psalms 69:32

_I WILL PRAISE THE NAME OF GOD WITH A SONG, AND WILL MAGNIFY HIM WITH THANKSGIVING._ -He resolves because of the anticipation of glorification (Psalms 69:29), to praise God, and hopes that his deliverance will cause gladness to the humble saints. Verse 31. THIS ALSO SHALL PLEASE THE LORD BETTER THAN AN OX (OR) BULLOCK THAT HATH HORNS AND HOOFS - i:e., having divided hoofs, the mark of clean animals (Leviticus 11:3). 'Better than any victim, however perfect.' Mere material offerings cannot please God, who is a Spirit, in themselves, but only in so far as they are expressions of sincere faith and love. Verse 32. THE HUMBLE SHALL SEE (THIS), AND BE GLAD - i:e., shall see God's deliverance of One afflicted still more severely than themselves, and so shall joyfully

32._The afflicted have seen it. _He here shows that the blessed effects of his deliverance will extend to others as well as to himself, a point which he frequently insists on in the Psalms, as we have seen in Psalms 22:23, and in many other places. And his object in doing this is, partly to commend the goodness and grace of God to true believers, and partly that by this as an argument he may prevail with God to succor him. Besides, he does not mean that God’s people would rejoice at this spectacle merely on the ground of brotherly friendship, but because, in the deliverance of one man, a pledge would be given to others, affording them also assurance of salvation. For this very reason he terms them _the afflicted. _Whoever seek God, (says he,) although they may be subjected to afflictions, will nevertheless take courage from my example. 30-36 The psalmist concludes the psalm with holy joy and praise, which he began with complaints of his grief. It is a great comfort to us, that humble and thankful praises are more pleasing to God than the most costly, pompous sacrifices. The humble shall look to him, and be glad; those that seek him through Christ shall live and be comforted. God will do great things for the gospel church, in which let all who wish well to it rejoice. A seed shall serve him on earth, and his servants shall inherit his heavenly kingdom. Those that love his name shall dwell before him for ever. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Arise, thou great Restorer of the ancient places to dwell in, and turn away ungodliness from thy people...

Verse Psalms 69:32. _THE HUMBLE SHALL SEE_ THIS, AND _BE GLAD_] Those who are _low_, pressed down by misfortune or cruelty, shall see this and take courage; expecting that thou wilt lift _them_ up also; and thus the heart of those who seek the Lord shall be _revived_....

THE HUMBLE SHALL SEE THIS, AND BE GLAD - Margin, “The meek.” That is, Others who are thus afflicted - the poor, the needy, the oppressed, the sad - shall be made acquainted with what has been done in my behalf, and shall take courage, or be strengthened. They will learn to trust that God will also interpose in “their” troubles, and bring them out of “their” distresses. AND YOUR HEART SHALL LIVE THAT SEEK GOD - Shall be revived; shall be encouraged, strengthened, animated....

EXPOSITION THIS is the cry of one suffering severely from men, partly on account of his own sins (Psalms 69:5), but mainly for the sake of God (Psalms 69:7). It is said to be "written in the style of Jeremiah" (Cheyne); but the resemblance to several Davidical psalms, especially Psalms 22:1, Psalms 25:1, and Psalms 40:1, is admitted; and the expression, "Al Shoshannim," in the "title," connects it also with Psalms 45:1 :Moreover, the "title

The resurrection and exaltation of Christ, Psalms 69:29; the meek and humble followers of Christ, as his disciples were, saw him risen from the dead, saw him alive, to whom he showed himself forty days after his resurrection; they saw his hands, and feet, and side, and the prints of the nails and spear in them; they saw him go up to heaven, to be set on high at the right hand of God; and humble believers now see him by faith, crowned with glory and honour; and as the disciples were glad, and rejoiced when they saw him again, and when he was parted from them, and went up to heaven, John 20:20; so true believers in Christ, who have a spiritual sight of a risen, ascended, and exalted Saviour, are glad, and rejoice in him with joy unspeakable, and full of glory,...

LXIX. A PRAYER FOR DELIVERANCE AND REVENGE. The author was a pious Jew, burning with zeal for the purity of the Temple worship (Psalms 69:9). He was a representative man, so that the reproaches of those that reproached Yahweh fell upon him. If he was defeated, the pious throughout Israel would lose hope. He was in great danger of his life, and that from his fellow-Jews (Psalms 69:8). Maccabean times suit the situation best, though Maccabean origin is incapable of proof. _Cf., e.g.,_ the career of Alcimus (pp. 382, 607) the Hellenised High Priest as related in 1 Maccabees 9, where ho is said to have pulled down the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary.
