27._Add iniquity to their iniquity. _As the Hebrew word און,_avon, _signifies at times _guilt _as well as _iniquity, _some translate the verse thus, _Add thou, _that is, thou, O God! _punishment to their punishment _Others extend it yet further, regarding it as a prayer that wicked men might punish them for their wickedness. But it is abundantly evident, from the second clause, that what David prays for rather is, as is almost universally admitted, that God, taking his Spirit altogether from the wicked, would give them over to a reprobate mind, that they might never seek or have any desire to be brought to genuine repentance and amendment. Verse Psalms 69:27. _ADD INIQUITY UNTO THEIR INIQUITY_] תנה עון על עונם _tenah avon al avonam; give iniquity_, that is, the _reward_ of it, _upon_ or _for their iniquity_. Or, as the original signifies _perverseness_, treat their _perverseness_ with _perverseness_: act, in thy judgments, as _crookedly_ towards them as they dealt _crookedly_ towards thee. He was a representative man, so that the reproaches of those that reproached Yahweh fell upon him. If he was defeated, the pious throughout Israel would lose hope. He was in great danger of his life, and that from his fellow-Jews (Psalms 69:8).
