Verse Exodus 29:22. _THE FAT AND THE RUMP_] The _rump_ or _tail_ of some of the eastern sheep is the best part of the animal, and is counted a great delicacy. They are also very large, some of them weighing from _twelve_ to _forty pounds_' weight; "so that the owners," says Mr. _Ludolf_, in his _History of Ethiopia_, "are obliged to tie a little cart behind them, whereon they put the tail of the sheep, as well for the convenience of carriage, and to ease the poor creature, as to preserve the wool from dirt, and the tail from being torn among the bushes and stones." EXPOSITION EXODUS 29:1 THE CONSECRATION OF THE PRIESTS. From the description of the priestly attire, the Divine Law-giver passed to the form of priestly consecration, whereof investiture in the "holy garments" was a part. The ceremony of consecration was to consist of four things:— 1. Ablution; 2. Investiture; 3. Chrism or Anointing with oil; and 4. Sacrifice. In the directions given, we have, first, the preparation of the offerings (Exodus 29:1); secondly, directions for the ablutions (Exodus 29:4); thirdly,

For the various sacrifices, _see_ the appropriate sections of Leviticus 1-7*, which belong to an older stratum of P, and are presupposed throughout. (I.) The _installation-offering_(cf. Leviticus 8:22-29). This was essentially a _peace_-offering, the special characteristic of which was that the flesh of the sacrifice was partaken of by the offerer and his friends (cf. on Exodus 20:24; and see here _vv._32 34), with modifications due to the particular occasion (such as the application of the blood to the priests and their garments, _vv._20, 21, the solemn -waving" of the offerings in the priests" hands, _vv._22 25, the special term -ram of _installation_," &c.). THE RIGHT-SHOULDER; FOR IT IS A RAM OF CONSECRATION— See Exodus 29:27. _A ram of consecration,_ in the Hebrew, is _a ram of fillings;_ for the meaning of which, see note on Exodus 29:9. The _right-shoulder_ in _peace-offerings_ belonged to the priest, Leviticus 7:32 but as they, who were now consecrating, were not yet priests, it was to be burnt upon the altar. The rump here spoken of, means the remarkably large and fat tail which the eastern sheep bear, and which are sometimes of very considerable weight. See Bochart and Ludolph....
