_AND THOU SHALT TAKE THE GARMENTS, AND PUT UPON AARON THE COAT, AND THE ROBE OF THE EPHOD, AND THE EPHOD, AND THE BREASTPLATE, AND GIRD HIM WITH THE CURIOUS GIRDLE OF THE EPHOD:_ Wash them with water, and ... take the garments. The manner in which these parts of the ceremonial was performed is minutely described; and in discovering their symbolical import, which, indeed, is sufficiently plain and obvious, we have inspired authority to guide us. Water was used as a sensible sign of transition from an unprivileged to a privileged state. EXPOSITION EXODUS 29:1 THE CONSECRATION OF THE PRIESTS. From the description of the priestly attire, the Divine Law-giver passed to the form of priestly consecration, whereof investiture in the "holy garments" was a part. The ceremony of consecration was to consist of four things:— 1. Ablution; 2. Investiture; 3. Chrism or Anointing with oil; and 4. Sacrifice. GARMENTS The priest's garments were put on in reverse order of the instructions for making them: (1) The "coat" (Exodus 28:39) the oriental long garment worn next to the person, made of fine linen. (Exodus 27:9). (2) The "robe of the ephod" (Exodus 28:31) a long seamless garment of blue linen with an opening for the head, worn over the "coat." Pomegranates, symbol of fruitfulness, were embroidered on the skirt of the robe in blue, purple, and scarlet, alternated with golden bells, symbol of testimony, which gave a sound as the high priest went in and out of the sanctuary.
