Verse Exodus 29:25. _THOU SHALT RECEIVE THEM OF THEIR HANDS_] Aaron and his sons are here considered merely as any common persons bringing an offering to God, and not having, as yet, any authority to present it themselves, but through the _medium_ of a _priest_. Moses, therefore, was now to Aaron and his sons what they were afterwards to the children of Israel; and as the minister of God he now _consecrates_ them to the sacred office, and presents their offerings to Jehovah....

EXPOSITION EXODUS 29:1 THE CONSECRATION OF THE PRIESTS. From the description of the priestly attire, the Divine Law-giver passed to the form of priestly consecration, whereof investiture in the "holy garments" was a part. The ceremony of consecration was to consist of four things:— 1. Ablution; 2. Investiture; 3. Chrism or Anointing with oil; and 4. Sacrifice. In the directions given, we have, first, the preparation of the offerings (Exodus 29:1); secondly, directions for the ablutions (Exodus 29:4); thirdly,

After they had been put into them, and filled with them, and waved by them: AND BURN THEM UPON THE ALTAR FOR A BURNT OFFERING; not the flesh of the ram, which is after ordered to be boiled and eaten by Aaron and his sons; but the fat of it, before described, with one loaf, one cake, and one wafer of unleavened bread, out of the basket: this was done FOR A SWEET SAVOUR BEFORE THE LORD; that it might be grateful and acceptable to him, as it was: IT IS AN OFFERING MADE BY FIRE UNTO THE LORD; Exodus 29:18....

The _installation-offering_(cf. Leviticus 8:22-29). This was essentially a _peace_-offering, the special characteristic of which was that the flesh of the sacrifice was partaken of by the offerer and his friends (cf. on Exodus 20:24; and see here _vv._32 34), with modifications due to the particular occasion (such as the application of the blood to the priests and their garments, _vv._20, 21, the solemn -waving" of the offerings in the priests" hands, _vv._22 25, the special term -ram of _installation_," &c.).
