1-37 Aaron and his sons were to be set apart for the priest's office, with ceremony and solemnity. Our Lord Jesus is the great High Priest of our profession, called of God to be so; anointed with the Spirit, whence he is called Messiah, the Christ; clothed with glory and beauty; sanctified by his own blood; made perfect, or consecrated through sufferings, Hebrews 2:10. All believers are spiritual priests, to offer spiritual sacrifices, 1 Peter 2:5, washed in the blood of Christ, and so made to our God priests, Revelation 1:5; Revelation 1:6. Verse Exodus 29:23. _AND ONE LOAF OF BREAD_] The bread of different kinds, (Exodus 29:2,) in this offering, seems to have been intended as a _minchah_, or offering of _grateful_ acknowledgment for providential blessings. The essence of worship consisted in acknowledging God, 1. As the Creator, Governor, and Preserver of all things, and the Dispenser of every good and perfect gift. 2. As the Judge of men, the Punisher of sin, and he who alone could pardon it. The minchahs, heave-offerings, wave-offerings, and thank-offerings, referred to the _first_ point. The burnt-offerings, sin-offerings, and sacrifices in general, referred to the _second_....

EXPOSITION EXODUS 29:1 THE CONSECRATION OF THE PRIESTS. From the description of the priestly attire, the Divine Law-giver passed to the form of priestly consecration, whereof investiture in the "holy garments" was a part. The ceremony of consecration was to consist of four things:— 1. Ablution; 2. Investiture; 3. Chrism or Anointing with oil; and 4. Sacrifice. In the directions given, we have, first, the preparation of the offerings (Exodus 29:1); secondly, directions for the ablutions (Exodus 29:4); thirdly,

AND ONE LOAF OF BREAD,.... Of unleavened bread, as in Exodus 29:2 large bread is meant, as Ben Melech observes, for the rest were cakes and wafers, as follows: AND ONE CAKE OF OILED BREAD; which was made of flour and oil mixed and tempered together: AND ONE WAFER OUT OF THE BASKET OF UNLEAVENED BREAD; which was anointed with oil and crossed, as the Jewish writers say: THAT [IS] BEFORE THE LORD; which basket of unleavened bread, cakes, and wafers, was set in the court of the tabernacle, and so said to be before the Lord, being devoted to whatever use he should assign them, being by his orders brought thither....

CHAPTER 29 THE CONSECRATION OF THE PRIESTS _ 1. Aaron and his sons wash with water (Exodus 29:1)_ 2. Aaron clothed (Exodus 29:5) 3. The consecration (Exodus 29:8) 4. Here it is only the instruction, while in Leviticus we find the act of the consecration. We touch upon it briefly; in Leviticus, we shall follow it a little closer. First they

EXODUS 29. P (Exodus 29:21; Exodus 29:38 later). CONSECRATION OF THE PRIESTHOOD (_cf._ Leviticus 8). The ritual of consecration is described at length. For the various sacrifices, _see_ the appropriate sections of Leviticus 1-7*, which belong to an older stratum of P, and are presupposed throughout. (I.) The materials for the sacrificial ceremonial include a bullock and two rams, bread of unleavened cakes, perforated cakes (perforations are still made in the Passover cakes), and large thin wafers, all unleavened, and to be brought in a basket (Exodus 29:1). (II.) All the priests to be consecrated must be bathed ...

The _installation-offering_(cf. Leviticus 8:22-29). This was essentially a _peace_-offering, the special characteristic of which was that the flesh of the sacrifice was partaken of by the offerer and his friends (cf. on Exodus 20:24; and see here _vv._32 34), with modifications due to the particular occasion (such as the application of the blood to the priests and their garments, _vv._20, 21, the solemn -waving" of the offerings in the priests" hands, _vv._22 25, the special term -ram of _installation_," &c.). AND ONE LOAF OF BREAD— The words, _for it is a ram of consecration,_ in the former verse, should be read in a parenthesis, and then there will be no occasion for that transposition which Le Clerc thinks necessary, who would connect this with the 18th verse; for these parts of the second ram, with the _bread_ and _cake,_ &c. were to be put into the hands of Aaron and his sons, to initiate them, as it were, into their office, and to confirm them in the right of sacrificing: accordingly, with a view to this, they were to _wave the offerings before the Lord,_ after which the consecrator was to receive them from their hands, and burn them upon the altar....
