Verse Exodus 29:7. _THEN SHALT THOU TAKE THE ANOINTING OIL_] It appears, from Isaiah 61:1, that _anointing with oil_, in consecrating a person to any important office, whether _civil_ or _religious_, was considered as an emblem of the communication of the gifts and graces of the _Holy Spirit_. This ceremony was used on _three_ occasions, viz., the installation of _prophets, priests_, and _kings_, into their respective offices. But why should such an anointing be deemed necessary? Because the common sense of men taught them that all good, whether spiritual or secular, must come from God, its origin and cause. Hence it was taken for granted, 1. EXPOSITION EXODUS 29:1 THE CONSECRATION OF THE PRIESTS. From the description of the priestly attire, the Divine Law-giver passed to the form of priestly consecration, whereof investiture in the "holy garments" was a part. The ceremony of consecration was to consist of four things:— 1. Ablution; 2. Investiture; 3. Chrism or Anointing with oil; and 4. Sacrifice. The investiture and anointing of the high priest. The high priest is to be arrayed in the garments described in ch. 28, and then to have his head anointed. Cf. Leviticus 8:7-10 a, Leviticus 8:12 (_vv._10b 11, relating to the anointing of the _Dwelling_, altar, &c., have no parallel in Exodus 29, and seem out of place)....

TAKE THE ANOINTING OIL— This third particular in the ceremony of consecration, signified the communication of the Divine Spirit: see Isaiah 61:1. Anointing was always used as one of the rites of inauguration into the regal, priestly, or prophetic office: hence JESUS, the King, Priest, and Prophet of his people, is emphatically called the _Messiah_ or _Christ;_ that is, the _Anointed:_ he who _received not the Spirit by measure._ Though the anointing of Aaron only is mentioned here, it is plain from the 30th verse of the next chapter, that his sons also were anointed in the same manner with him.
