EXPOSITION EXODUS 29:1 THE CONSECRATION OF THE PRIESTS. From the description of the priestly attire, the Divine Law-giver passed to the form of priestly consecration, whereof investiture in the "holy garments" was a part. The ceremony of consecration was to consist of four things:— 1. Ablution; 2. Investiture; 3. Chrism or Anointing with oil; and 4. Sacrifice. This was essentially a _peace_-offering, the special characteristic of which was that the flesh of the sacrifice was partaken of by the offerer and his friends (cf. on Exodus 20:24; and see here _vv._32 34), with modifications due to the particular occasion (such as the application of the blood to the priests and their garments, _vv._20, 21, the solemn -waving" of the offerings in the priests" hands, _vv._22 25, the special term -ram of _installation_," &c.). AND THOU SHALT TAKE THE BREAST OF THE RAM, &C.— Moses, acting as priest in the consecration of the priests, was to _take to himself the breast of the ram,_ as well as to _sanctify_ or _set apart_ that, together with the _shoulder,_ (Exodus 29:27.) for the priest, use in all future times, having first acknowledged it to be the Lord's by a solemn _waving_ or _heaving_ it up before the Lord. The difference between _waving_ and _heaving,_ as some say, is, that the latter was only a _lifting up_ towards heaven in token of the offering being devoted to God; the other was a _waving it up and down,_ east, west, north, and south, to signify, as Maimonides explains it, that He, to whom it was offered, was Lord of the whole world: the words, however, are sometimes used for an offering in general.
