17._Even in your law it is written. _The argument might, at first sight, appear to be weak, because no man is received as a witness in his own cause. But we ought to remember what I have already said, that the Son of God (217) ought to be excluded from the ordinary number of other men, (218) because he neither is a private individual, nor transacts his own private business. As to his distinguishing himself from his Father, by doing so he accommodates himself to the capacity of his hearers, and that on account of his office, because he was at that time a servant of the Father, from whom, therefore, he asserts that all his doctrine has proceeded....

17-20 If we knew Christ better, we should know the Father better. Those become vain in their imaginations concerning God, who will not learn of Christ. Those who know not his glory and grace, know not the Father that sent him. The time of our departure out of the world, depends upon God. Our enemies cannot hasten it any sooner, nor can our friends delay it any longer, than the time appointed of the Father. Every true believer can look up and say with pleasure, My times are in thy hand, and better there than in my own. To all God's purposes there is a time....

IN YOUR LAW - Deuteronomy 17:6; Deuteronomy 19:15. Compare Matthew 18:16. This related to cases in which the life of an individual was involved. Jesus says that if, in such a case, the testimony of two men were sufficient to establish a fact, his own testimony and that of his Father ought to be esteemed ample evidence in the case of religious doctrine. TWO MEN - If two men could confirm a case, the evidence of Jesus and of God ought not to be deemed insufficient. IS TRUE - In Deuteronomy, “established.” This means the same thing. It is confirmed; is worthy of belief....

If we remove the _Pericope adulterai_ (John 7:53 to John 8:11, clearly a later addition, though a genuine piece of gospel tradition, possibly belonging originally to Lk. and inserted here to illustrate John 8:15, I judge no man), this section regains its natural connexion with John 8:7, and especially John 7:15. IT IS ALSO WRITTEN IN YOUR LAW. The Jewish law which they accepted as divine. It declared (Deuteronomy 19:15) that the testimony of two witnesses was to be accepted. In this case, besides his own witness, there was other testimony to confirm it. It will be noticed that Jesus does not say _our_ law. He never classes himself with the Jews....
