25._From the beginning. _They who translate the words τὴν ἀρχὴν, as if they had been in the nominative case, _I am the beginning_, (227) and as if Christ were here asserting his eternal Divinity, are greatly mistaken. There is no ambiguity of this sort in the Greek, but still the Greek commentators also differ as to the meaning. Verse 25. _WHO ART THOU?_] This marks the indignation of the Pharisees-as if they had said: Who art thou that takest upon thee to deal out threatenings in this manner against us? _JESUS SAITH UNTO THEM, EVEN THE SAME THAT I SAID UNTO YOU FROM_ _the beginning._] Rather, _Just what I have already told you_, i.e. that _I am the light of the world _- the Christ-the Saviour of mankind.
