And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. AND THE SERVANT (OR, 'NOW THE [BOND-]SERVANT') ABIDETH NOT IN THE HOUSE FOREVER: [BUT] THE SON ABIDETH EVER....

35._Now the slave remaineth not in the house always. _He adds a comparison, taken from the laws and from political law, to the effect that _a slave_, though he may have power for a time, yet is not the heir of the house; from which he infers that there is no perfect and durable_freedom_, but what is obtained through_the Son _In this manner he accuses the Jews of vanity, because they hold but a mask instead of the reality; for, as to their being _Abraham _’_s offspring_, they were nothing but a mask. They held a place in the Church of God, but such a place as Ishmael, _a slave_, rising up against his _freeborn _brother, usurped for a short time, (Galatians 4:29.) The conclusion is, that all who boast of being _Abraham _’_s children _have nothing but an empty and deceitful pretense....

30-36 Such power attended our Lord's words, that many were convinced, and professed to believe in him. He encouraged them to attend his teaching, rely on his promises, and obey his commands, notwithstanding all temptations to evil. Thus doing, they would be his disciples truly; and by the teaching of his word and Spirit, they would learn where their hope and strength lay. Verse 35. _AND THE SERVANT ABIDETH NOT IN THE HOUSE_] Or, rather, _Now the slave abided not in the family_. As if Jesus had said: And now that I am speaking of a _slave_, I will add one thing more, viz. a slave has no _right_ to any part of the _inheritance_ in the family to which he belongs; but the _son_, the _legitimate_ son, has a right. He can make any servant of the family free, though no slave can. He can divide or bestow the inheritance as he pleases. Our Lord seems here to refer to the sending away of Ishmael, mentioned, Genesis 21:10-1. Only those who are genuine children can inherit the estate. THE SERVANT ABIDETH NOT ... - The servant does not, of course, remain forever, or until his death. with his master. If he is disobedient and wicked, the master sells him or turns him away. He is not the heir, and may at any time be expelled from the house of his master. But a son is the heir. He cannot be in this manner cast off or sold. He is privileged with the right of remaining in the family. This takes place in common life. So said the Saviour to the Jews: “You, if you are disobedient and rebellious, may at any time be rejected from being the people of God, and be deprived of your special privileges as a nation. You are in the condition of servants, and unless you are made free by the gospel, and become entitled to the privilege of the sons of God, you will be cast off like an unfaithful slave.” Compare Hebrews 3:5. CONTROVERSY WITH THE JEWS WHO BELIEVED. Many are convinced by this appeal. The following section summarises the teaching by which Jesus tried to bring the more favourably disposed of the Jewish party to a fuller faith. If they will make Christ's teaching a real part of their lives, they will gain the truth which sets men free. They take offence.
