38._I speak what I have seen with my Father. _He had already made frequent mention of _his Father_; and now, by an argument drawn from contrary things, he infers that they are enemies to God, and are _the children of the devil_, because they oppose his doctrine. “For my part,” says he, “I bring nothing forward, but what I have learned from my Father. How comes it then that the word of God excites you to such fury, but because you have an opposite_father _?”He says that he _speaks_, and they _do_, because he discharged the office of a teacher, while they labored strenuously to extinguish his doctrine. Where the word of God has no place, no good is to be expected; room is left there for all wickedness. A sick person who turns from his physician, and will take neither remedies nor food, is past hope of recovery. The truth both heals and nourishes the hearts of those who receive it. Verse 38. _I SPEAK THAT WHICH I HAVE SEEN_] I speak nothing but that unchangeable, eternal truth which I have received from the bosom of God. _YE DO THAT WHICH YE HAVE SEEN_] Instead of εωρακατε, _ye have_ _seen_, I think we should read ηκουσατε, _ye have heard_, on the authority of BCKL, _fifteen_ others; _Coptic, AEthiopic, Armenian_, later _Syriac_ in the margin, _Gothic_, one copy of the _Itala; Origen,_ _Cyril_, and _Chrysostom_. This reading, says Bishop Pearce, (who has adopted it,) seems preferable to the other, because it could not be said, with the same propriety, that the Jews had _seen_ any thing with their father the devil, as it could that Jesus had _seen_ with his.
