EXPOSITION THE SIN OFFERING (Leviticus 4:1, Leviticus 5:1). At the time of the Mosaic legislation, burnt offerings and meat offerings were already in existence, and had existed from the time of the Fall. A beginning, therefore, is made with them, and the regulations of the peace offerings naturally follow, because these sacrifices succeed in order to the burnt and meat offerings, and because sacrifices in some respects of the same nature as peace offerings had previously existed under a different name (cf. _The Sin-Offering for one of the common people_(Heb. -people of the land"), _a she-goat or a lamb_ The she-goat (Leviticus 4:28), according to Numbers 15:27, was to be of the first year. The lamb (Leviticus 4:32) was also to be a female. The ritual is the same for both animals, and like that of the offering of the ruler. THE SIN OFFERING (4:1-5:13) AND THE GUILT OFFERING (5:14-6:7) These are later and specialised forms of the Burnt Offering. They presuppose a state of matters in which the good relationship between God and the offerer has been interrupted by sin, and the purpose of both is to make atonement for, or cover, the sin of the guilty person or persons. The difference between the two seems to be that while the sin offering is provided for those offences which could not be undone or repaired, the guilt offering is provided for those cases where reparation and restitution are possible, a fine or penalty being imposed on the transgressor in the latter instance (Leviticus 5:16; Leviticus 6:4).
