And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. AND, BEHOLD, TWO OF THEM. For the name of the one, see the note at Luke 24:18. Who the other was is mere conjecture. WENT [OR 'WERE PROCEEDING' eesan (G1510 ) poreuomenoi (G4198 )] THAT SAME DAY TO A VILLAGE CALLED EMMAUS, WHICH WAS FROM JERUSALEM ABOUT THREESCORE FURLONGS - or, about seven and half miles; but the spot has not been satisfactorily determined. Perhaps they were returning home after the Passover....

Luke 24:13._And lo, two of them. _Although Mark touches slightly and briefly on this narrative, and Matthew and John say not a single word respecting it; yet as it is highly useful to be known and worthy of being remembered, it is not without reason that Luke treats it with so much exactness. But I have already mentioned on various occasions, that each of the Evangelists had his portion so appropriately assigned to him by the Spirit of God, that what is not to be found in one or two of them may be learned from the others. For there are also many appearances (312) which are mentioned by John, but are passed over in silence by our three Evangelists. Before I come to the minute details, it will be proper to begin with stating briefly, that those were two chosen witnesses, by whom the Lord intended, not to convince the apostles that he was risen,

Verse Luke 24:13. _BEHOLD, TWO OF THEM_] This long and interesting account is not mentioned by Matthew nor John, and is only glanced at by Mark, Mark 16:12. One of these disciples was _Cleopas_, Luke 24:18, and the other is supposed by many learned men, both ancient and modern, to have been _Luke_ himself. See the sketch of his life prefixed to these notes. Some of the ancient versions have called the other disciple _Ammaus_ and _Ammaon_, reading the verse thus: _Behold two of them, Ammaus and Cleopas, were going_ _in that very day to a village about sixty furlongs distant from_ _Jerusalem_. But the Persian says positively that it was _Luke_ who accompanied Cleopas. See the inscription...

“Two of them.” Two of the disciples. The name of one of them was “Cleopas,” Luke 24:18. Many have supposed that the other was Luke, and that he omitted his own name from modesty. Others have supposed that it was Peter. See Luk 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:5. There is no evidence to guide us here. Dr. Lightfoot has shown that “Cleopas” is the same name as “Alpheus,” who was the father of the apostle James, Matthew 10:3. EMMAUS - In regard to the locality of Emmaus, it seems quite probable that it is the same village which is referred to by Josephus (“Jewish Wars,” vii. 6, Section 6), who states that, after the destruction

LUKE 24:13 e`xh,konta {B} The variant reading e`kato.n e`xh,konta (a K* Q P syrpal arm) seems to have arisen in connection with patristic identification of Emmaus with ‘Amwâs (mod. Nicopolis), about twenty-two Roman miles (176 stadia) from Jerusalem (thus Eusebius, Jerome, Sozomen, though they do not mention the distance). This, however, is too far for the travelers to have re-traversed that same evening (ver. Luke 24:33). The “seven” of ite is undoubtedly due to a scribal blunder....
