But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. BUT THEY CONSTRAINED HIM, SAYING, ABIDE WITH US; FOR IT IS TOWARD EVENING, AND THE DAY IS FAR SPENT. AND HE WENT IN TO TARRY WITH THEM. But for this, the whole design of the interview had been lost; but it was not to be lost, because He who only wished to be constrained had kindled a longing in the hearts of His traveling companions which was not to be so easily put off....

28-35 If we would have Christ dwell with us, we must be earnest with him. Those that have experienced the pleasure and profit of communion with him, cannot but desire more of his company. Verse 29. _FOR IT IS TOWARD EVENING_] And consequently both inconvenient and unsafe to proceed to another village. Reader! it is probably the _eve_ of thy life, whether thou be _old_ or _young_: thy day may have _already declined_, and there is, possibly, but _a_ _step_ between thee and the eternal world! Hath the Lord Jesus _taught_ thee by his _word_ and _Spirit_ to believe in him, that thou mightest be saved? Is he come into thy heart? Hast thou the _witness_ of his _Spirit_ that thy _sin_ is _blotted out_ through his blood? Romans 8:16; Galatians 4:6; 1 John 5:10. If thou have not, get thee to God right humbly. CONSTRAINED HIM - They urged him, or pressingly invited him. They did not yet perceive that it was Jesus, but they had been charmed and delighted with his discourse, and they wished to hear him farther. Christians are delighted with communion with the Saviour. They seek it as the chief object of their desire, and they find their chief pleasure in fellowship with him. The two disciples felt it a privilege to entertain the stranger, as they supposed, who had so charmed them with his discourse; and so those to whom the gospel is preached, and who love it, feel it a privilege, and not a burden, to show kindness to those who bear to them the message of salvation. ABIDE WITH US - Remain with us, or pass the night in our house....

EXPOSITION LUKE 24:1 THE RESURRECTION. All the four evangelists give an account of the Resurrection. None of the four, however, attempt to give a _history _of_ _it simply from a human point of sight. Each Gospel probably reproduces the special points dwelt on in certain great centres of Christian teaching, in what we should now term different schools of thought. (Attempts have been made by theological scholars to _classify _these as Jewish, Gentile, Greek, Roman; but only with indifferent success). The Arabic version renders it, "they held him by force": but the meaning is not, that they laid hands on him, and held him in a forcible manner against his will; but they were very urgent and importunate with him, that he would stay with them; they would take no denial. The sense is better given in the Persic version, "the disciples with importunity said unto him"; they were so pressing with arguments, that he could not withstand them: SAYING, ABIDE WITH US; his conversation was so engaging, and his discourses were so heavenly and instructive, so sweet and delightful, so powerful and moving, that they could not bear to part with him, but were exceeding desirous of his continuance with them, even though he was a stranger to them. THE APPEARANCE ON THE WAY TO EMMAUS. This exquisite story is told by Lk. only. The village is perhaps the Ammaus of Josephus, the modern Kolonije, five miles W. from Jerusalem. Luke 24:19 f_._ describes Jesus as a prophet who His friends hoped (till the hope was shattered by His death) might prove to be the Messiah. They are shown that Scripture foretold Messiah's death; it was necessary to His glory. That glory was apparently attained in the moment of the death (_cf. Luke 23:42_ f.).
