1-12 See the affection and respect the women showed to Christ, after he was dead and buried. Observe their surprise when they found the stone rolled away, and the grave empty. Christians often perplex themselves about that with which they should comfort and encourage themselves. They look rather to find their Master in his grave-clothes, than angels in their shining garments. The angels assure them that he is risen from the dead; is risen by his own power. These angels from heaven bring not any new gospel, but remind the women of Christ's words, and teach them how to apply them. We may wonder that these disciples, who believed Jesus to be the Son of God and the true Messiah, who had been so often told that he must die, and rise again, and then enter into his glory, who had seen him more than once raise the dead, yet should be so backward to believe his raising himself. Verse Luke 24:2. _THEY FOUND THE STONE ROLLED AWAY_] An angel from God had done this before they reached the tomb, Matthew 28:2: On this case we cannot help remarking, that, when persons have strong confidence in God, obstacles do not hinder them from undertaking whatever they have reason to believe he requires; and the removal of them they leave to him: and what is the consequence? They go on their way comfortably, and all difficulties vanish before them....

EXPOSITION LUKE 24:1 THE RESURRECTION. All the four evangelists give an account of the Resurrection. None of the four, however, attempt to give a _history _of_ _it simply from a human point of sight. Each Gospel probably reproduces the special points dwelt on in certain great centres of Christian teaching, in what we should now term different schools of thought. Which Joseph had laid there, security of the body, and in the sight of these women; and which gave them a concern, as they went along, seeing they were all women, who should roll away the stone for them, Mark 16:3 but when they came to the sepulchre, to their great surprise, they found it rolled away, which was done by an angel, Matthew 28:2....

THE EMPTY TOMB (Mark 16:1 *, Matthew 28:1 *). Lk. tells of two men in place of Mk.'s young man. They remind the women that Jesus had foretold His resurrection. Instead of the injunction to meet Him in Galilee, the prediction is said to have been spoken in Galilee. Lk. (like Jn. apart from Luke 24:21) does not mention any resurrection appearances outside Jerusalem and its neighbourhood. The women tell the eleven and the other disciples (_cf._ Mt., contrast Mk.). The disciples are incredulous. According to Luke 24:12, Peter goes to see the tomb for himself, but the verso is not found in the Old Latin or Old Syriac versions, and is probably a late
