Luke 24:31._And their eyes were opened. _By these words, we are taught that there was not in Christ any _metamorphosis, _or _variety of forms, _by which he might impose on the eyes of men, (as the poets feign their _Proteus,_) but that, on the contrary, the eyes of beholders were mistaken, because they were covered; just as, shortly afterwards, _he vanished from the eyes _of those very persons, not because his body was in itself invisible, but because God, by withdrawing their rigor, blunted their acuteness. Nor ought we to wonder that Christ, as soon as he was recognized, immediately disappeared; for it was not advantageous that they should any longer behold him, lest, as they were naturally too much addicted to the earth, they might desire again to bring him back to an earthly life. Verse 31. _THEIR EYES WERE OPENED_] But we are not to imagine that he administered the holy eucharist at this time; there is not the most distant evidence of this. It was a mere _family meal_, and ended before it was well begun. _THEY KNEW HIM_] His acting as father of the family, in _taking,_ _blessing_, and _distributing_ the _bread_ among them, caused them to _recollect_ those _lips_ which they had often heard _speak_, and those _hands_ by which they had often been fed. Perhaps he also threw off the disguise which he had before assumed; and now appeared in his own person. _HE VANISHED OUT OF THEIR SIGHT._] Probably, during their surprise, he took the opportunity of withdrawing from the place; leaving them to reflect and meditate on what they had heard and seen....

THEIR EYES WERE OPENED - The obscurity was removed. They saw him to be the Messiah. Their doubts were gone, and they saw clearly that he was risen, and was truly, as they had long hoped, the Saviour of people. It is not meant that they were before “blind,” but that they did not know until then who he was. HE VANISHED OUT OF THEIR SIGHT - He suddenly departed. It does not appear that there was anything miraculous in this, but, during their surprise, he took the opportunity suddenly to withdraw from them....

EXPOSITION LUKE 24:1 THE RESURRECTION. All the four evangelists give an account of the Resurrection. None of the four, however, attempt to give a _history _of_ _it simply from a human point of sight. Each Gospel probably reproduces the special points dwelt on in certain great centres of Christian teaching, in what we should now term different schools of thought. Not that they were before shut, or closed up, but what before held them was removed, and what hindered their sight and knowledge was taken away; and perhaps these actions of his taking the bread, and blessing, and breaking, and giving it to them, might put them in mind of him, and cause them to look wistfully at him, when, what beclouded their sight being gone, and he appearing in his usual form, they perceived who he was: AND THEY KNEW HIM; to be their dear Lord and master, for whose death they had been sorrowing, and of redemption by him, and of whose resurrection they had been doubting: AND VANISHED OUT OF THEIR SIGHT; not that he vanished as a spectre, or as smoke vanishes into air; but agility being a property of his risen body, he very suddenly, and swiftly, and in a moment, withdrew himself from them; for if he could withdraw himself from company...

THE APPEARANCE ON THE WAY TO EMMAUS. This exquisite story is told by Lk. only. The village is perhaps the Ammaus of Josephus, the modern Kolonije, five miles W. from Jerusalem. Luke 24:19 f_._ describes Jesus as a prophet who His friends hoped (till the hope was shattered by His death) might prove to be the Messiah. They are shown that Scripture foretold Messiah's death; it was necessary to His glory. That glory was apparently attained in the moment of the death (_cf. Luke 23:42_ f.). On arriving at Emmaus, Jesus, invited to be a guest, becomes the host, and then mysteriously disappears. The reading of Codex Bezæ in Luke 24:34, where the construction of the Gr. is awkward, makes the two disciples the speakers, and suggests t
