Luke 4:21

And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. AND HE BEGAN TO SAY UNTO THEM - language implying that only the substance, or even the general drift, of His address is here given. THIS DAY IS THIS SCRIPTURE FULFILLED IN YOUR EARS. The Evangelist means to say in a word, that His whole address was just a detailed application to Himself of this, and perhaps other like prophecies....

21._Today is fulfilled _Christ did not merely affirm in a few words, but proved by a reference to facts, that the time was now come, when it was the will of God to restore his ruined church. The object of his discourse was, to expound the prediction clearly to his hearers: just as expositors handle Scripture in a proper and orderly manner, when they apply it to the circumstances of those whom they address. He says that it was _fulfilled in their ears, _rather than _in their eyes, _because the bare sight of the fact was of little value, if doctrine had not held the chief place....

14-30 Christ taught in their synagogues, their places of public worship, where they met to read, expound, and apply the word, to pray and praise. All the gifts and graces of the Spirit were upon him and on him, without measure. By Christ, sinners may be loosed from the bonds of guilt, and by his Spirit and grace from the bondage of corruption. He came by the word of his gospel, to bring light to those that sat in the dark, and by the power of his grace, to give sight to those that were blind. THIS SCRIPTURE - This writing, or this part of the Scriptures. FULFILLED - It is coming to pass; the thing originally intended by it is about to be accomplished. IN YOUR EARS - In your “hearing;” or you hear, in my preaching, the fulfillment of this prophecy. It is probable that he said much “more” than is here recorded, but Luke has preserved only the “substance” of his discourse. This was the “amount” or “sum”” of his sermon, or his explanation of the passage, that it was now receiving its accomplishment....

EXPOSITION LUKE 4:1 THE TEMPTATION. The consecration of our Lord in his baptism was immediately followed by what is known as his temptation. It is, perhaps, the most mysterious and least understood of any of the scenes of the public ministry related by the evangelists. It is related at some length by SS. Matthew and Luke, with very slight difference of detail, the principal one being the order in which the three great temptations occurred. In St. Mark the notice of this strange episode in the life is very short, but harmonizes perfectly with the longer accounts of SS. Matthew and Luke. St John omits it altogether; first, because, with the earlier written Gospels before him, he was aware that the Church of his Master already possessed ample details of the occurrence; and secondly, the

To preach from those words; the explanation of which he gave, though not here recorded, and applied them to himself, to whom they belonged, saying: THIS DAY IS THIS SCRIPTURE FULFILLED IN YOUR EARS; which is as if he should say, I am the person here spoken of; and at this present time the Spirit of God is upon me; I am anointed with the Holy Ghost, and now preach glad tidings to you, and all the good things here mentioned, and for the several ends proposed; and this Scripture has its full accomplishment which has been read unto you, and you have heard this day. Luke 4:14. _And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee:_ Ah, dear brethren, if our Lord Jesus needed «the power of the Spirit», how much more do you and I need it! We have no power of our own, but he was the Son of God. He was a divine Teacher, and yet, when he went to his work, it was «in the power of the Spirit.» Tarry, brother, till you have that power; it is of no use for you to go without it. JESUS IN NAZARETH (Mark 1:14 f.*, Matthew 4:12 *, Mark 6:1 *, Matthew 13:53 *). Lk. brings Jesus to Galilee, but, anxious to make the mission begin in His own town, departs from Mk.'s order (though it leads him into difficulty, see Luke 4:23), and puts the rejection at Nazareth (Mark 6) at the beginning of the ministry.
