EXPOSITION LUKE 4:1 THE TEMPTATION. The consecration of our Lord in his baptism was immediately followed by what is known as his temptation. It is, perhaps, the most mysterious and least understood of any of the scenes of the public ministry related by the evangelists. It is related at some length by SS. Matthew and Luke, with very slight difference of detail, the principal one being the order in which the three great temptations occurred. In St. Mark the notice of this strange episode in the life is very short, but harmonizes perfectly with the longer accounts of SS. Matthew and Luke. St John omits it altogether; first, because, with the earlier written Gospels before him, he was aware that the Church of his Master already possessed ample details of the occurrence; and secondly, the

We are going to read some verses in the fourth and fifth Chapter s of Luke's Gospel, hospital Chapter s, I may call them, for they record many marvellous cures which were wrought by the great Physician, the Lord Jesus Christ. We shall begin at the 33 rd verse of the fourth chapter. Luke 4:33. _And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth?_ There are many people, at the present day, who have this evil spirit in them and they also say, «Let us alone.» They do not want to have their consciences disturbed; they would rather sleep on until they wake up in another world where their awaking will be too late to avail for their repentance. OTHER HEALINGS (Mark 1:32 *, Matthew 8:16 f.*, Matthew 4:23 *). The medical interest of Lk. here appears strongly. He distinguishes ordinary ailments from cases of demoniacal possession. Luke 4:43 is an announcement made earlier by Mk. (Mark 1:15); Lk. has had to defer it through his treatment of the Nazareth episode. LUKE 4:43.
