And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. For the exposition of this section-embracing, as appears, the first recorded transactions of our Lord on the Sabbath day in Galilee, and those of following morning-see the notes at Mark 1:29, and at Matthew 4:23....

Luke 4:33._A man having a spirit of an unclean devil. This _mode of expression, which Luke employs, conveys the idea, that the man was driven by the impulse of the devil. By the permission of God, Satan had seized the faculties of his soul in such a manner, as to drive him not only to speak, but to perform other movements, at his pleasure. And thus, when the _demoniacs _speak, the devils, who have received permission to tyrannise, speak in them and by them. The title, _Holy One of God, _was probably taken from a manner of speaking, which was, at that time, in ordinary and general use. The Messiah was so called, because he was to be distinguished and separated from all others, as endued with eminent grace, and as the Head of the whole Church....

31-44 Christ's preaching much affected the people; and a working power went with it to the consciences of men. These miracles showed Christ to be a controller and conqueror of Satan, a healer of diseases. Where Christ gives a new life, in recovery from sickness, it should be a new life, spent more than ever in his service, to his glory. Our business should be to spread abroad Christ's fame in every place, to beseech him in behalf of those diseased in body or mind, and to use our influence in bringing sinners to him, that his hands may be laid upon them for their healing. Verse 33. _A SPIRIT OF AN UNCLEAN DEVIL_] As _demon_ was used both in a _good_ and _bad_ sense before and after the time of the evangelists the word _unclean_ may have been added here by St. Luke, merely to express the quality of _this_ spirit. But it is worthy of remark, that the inspired writers never use the word δαιμων, _demon_, in a _good_ sense. See the whole of this case explained, Mark 1:23, c....

EXPOSITION LUKE 4:1 THE TEMPTATION. The consecration of our Lord in his baptism was immediately followed by what is known as his temptation. It is, perhaps, the most mysterious and least understood of any of the scenes of the public ministry related by the evangelists. It is related at some length by SS. Matthew and Luke, with very slight difference of detail, the principal one being the order in which the three great temptations occurred. In St. Mark the notice of this strange episode in the life is very short, but harmonizes perfectly with the longer accounts of SS. Matthew and Luke. St John omits it altogether; first, because, with the earlier written Gospels before him, he was aware that the Church of his Master already possessed ample details of the occurrence; and secondly, the

AND IN THE SYNAGOGUE THERE WAS A MAN,.... That is, in the synagogue at Capernaum, as Christ was there teaching, on one of the sabbath days before mentioned; there was a certain man, WHICH HAD A SPIRIT OF AN UNCLEAN DEVIL: who was possessed with the devil, who is by nature and practice unclean; and was filled with the spirit of the devil, with a spirit of divination, and was acted by him, to impose upon the people; he influenced his mind as an enthusiast, as well as possessed his body: and this was on the sabbath day; whereas the Jews say y, that "Satan and the evil demon flee on the sabbath day to the mountains of darkness, and do not appear all the sabbath day, because that day is holy, and they are "unclean"; but in the evening of the sabbath they prepare themselves, and meet the children of men, and hurt them.'' AND CRIED OUT WITH A LOUD VOICE;...

We are going to read the inspired records of several of our Saviour's Sabbath cures, for they are very instructive. Luke 4:33. _And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not._ And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! For with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out, This was a very remarkable cure wrought by the Lord Jesus Christ on the Sabbath-day. Now let us turn to another, which is recorded in the sixth chapter of this same Gospel.

The narrative keeps close to Mk., but note the phrase spirit of an unclean demon (Luke 4:33), and the assertion that the expelled spirit, though it threw the man down, did not hurt him (Mk. says it tore him)....
