And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. For the exposition of this section-embracing, as appears, the first recorded transactions of our Lord on the Sabbath day in Galilee, and those of following morning-see the notes at Mark 1:29, and at Matthew 4:23....

Luke 4:39._He rebuked the fever. _To a person not well acquainted with Scripture this mode of expression may appear harsh; but there were good reasons for employing it. _Fevers _and other diseases, famine, pestilence, and calamities of every description, are God’s heralds, (347) by whom he executes his judgments. Now, as he is said to send such messengers by his command and pleasure, so he also restrains and recalls them whenever he pleases. The manner in which he healed them is not mentioned by Matthew and Mark: but Luke says, that it was by _laying hands on each of them. _Under the Law, this was a sign of reconciliation; and, therefore, it was not improperly, or unseasonably, that Christ _laid hands _on those whom he freed from the curse of God. EXPOSITION LUKE 4:1 THE TEMPTATION. The consecration of our Lord in his baptism was immediately followed by what is known as his temptation. It is, perhaps, the most mysterious and least understood of any of the scenes of the public ministry related by the evangelists. It is related at some length by SS. Matthew and Luke, with very slight difference of detail, the principal one being the order in which the three great temptations occurred. In St. Mark the notice of this strange episode in the life is very short, but harmonizes perfectly with the longer accounts of SS. Matthew and Luke. St John omits it altogether; first, because, with the earlier written Gospels before him, he was aware that the Church of his Master already possessed ample details of the occurrence; and secondly, the

AND HE STOOD OVER HER,.... "At her head", as the Persic version reads: he inclined himself towards her, to see how she did, and to take her by the hand, and lift her up; AND REBUKED THE FEVER. The Syriac and Persic versions read, "her fever", that which was upon her; AND IT LEFT HER, as Mark says, "immediately"; as soon as ever he had touched her hand, and rebuked the fever, and bid it be gone: AND IMMEDIATELY SHE AROSE, AND MINISTERED UNTO THEM; Matthew 8:15....

We are going to read some verses in the fourth and fifth Chapter s of Luke's Gospel, hospital Chapter s, I may call them, for they record many marvellous cures which were wrought by the great Physician, the Lord Jesus Christ. We shall begin at the 33 rd verse of the fourth chapter. Luke 4:33. _And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth?_ There are many people, at the present day, who have this evil spirit in them and they also say, «Let us alone.» They do not want to have their consciences disturbed; they would rather sleep on until they wake up in another world where their awaking will be too late to avail for their repentance.
