31-44 Christ's preaching much affected the people; and a working power went with it to the consciences of men. These miracles showed Christ to be a controller and conqueror of Satan, a healer of diseases. Where Christ gives a new life, in recovery from sickness, it should be a new life, spent more than ever in his service, to his glory. Our business should be to spread abroad Christ's fame in every place, to beseech him in behalf of those diseased in body or mind, and to use our influence in bringing sinners to him, that his hands may be laid upon them for their healing. Verse 35. _AND HURT HIM NOT._] Though he _convulsed_ him, Mark 2:26, and _threw him down in the midst of them_, probably with the design to take away his life, yet our Lord permitted it not; and this appears to be the meaning of the place. The spirit was not permitted essentially to injure him at that time....

EXPOSITION LUKE 4:1 THE TEMPTATION. The consecration of our Lord in his baptism was immediately followed by what is known as his temptation. It is, perhaps, the most mysterious and least understood of any of the scenes of the public ministry related by the evangelists. It is related at some length by SS. Matthew and Luke, with very slight difference of detail, the principal one being the order in which the three great temptations occurred. In St. Mark the notice of this strange episode in the life is very short, but harmonizes perfectly with the longer accounts of SS. Matthew and Luke. St John omits it altogether; first, because, with the earlier written Gospels before him, he was aware that the Church of his Master already possessed ample details of the occurrence; and secondly, the

AND JESUS REBUKED HIM,.... Not the man, but the unclean spirit: or "that demon", as the Persic version reads it: SAYING, HOLD THY PEACE, or "be thou muzzled", as the word signifies, AND COME OUT OF HIM; Matthew 1:25. AND WHEN THE DEVIL HAD THROWN HIM IN THE MIDST; in the "midst of them", as the Arabic version adds; that is, in the midst of the people that were in the synagogue; or, as the Ethiopic version reads, "in the midst of the synagogue", where he threw him into convulsive fits, and left him: HE CAME OUT OF HIM, AND HURT HIM NOT; though he sadly convulsed him, and put him to great pain, yet he did not wound him in any part of his body, or take away the use of any of his limbs; and much less hurt his soul so as to destroy it; all which was desired and intended by him, but was hindered by Christ;

We are going to read the inspired records of several of our Saviour's Sabbath cures, for they are very instructive. Luke 4:33. _And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? Art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not._ And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! For with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out, This was a very remarkable cure wrought by the Lord Jesus Christ on the Sabbath-day. Now let us turn to another, which is recorded in the sixth chapter of this same Gospel.

A CASE OF EXORCISM (Mark 12:1 *). Lk. brings Jesus at once to Capernaum and so postpones the call of the first disciples (Mark 1:16) to ch. 5. The narrative keeps close to Mk., but note the phrase spirit of an unclean demon (Luke 4:33), and the assertion that the expelled spirit, though it threw the man down, did not hurt him (Mk. says it tore him)....
